Ozone tip: Play in the rain On March 7, Dr. Wayne Evans, an Environmental Science professor from Trent University and the first scientist to measure ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere, was the featured speaker for the fifth talk in the Scugog Green Team talk series. | Dr.Evans explained how the ozone layer acts to "protect all life on Earth from receiving excessive amounts of ultraviolet radiation, and how chemicals have been severely depleting this . protective layer since 1970. While there has been three to four times more ozone depletion in the southern hemisphere than in the northern, there are now serious concerns about the amount affecting the northern, due to the higher population base in the latter. Since 1970, the ozone layer has thinned globally by 7 per cent, allowing 10 per cent more ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth. While political action has ensured that most of-the chemicals to blame are being legislated against, the problem is still very grave, since it will take the ozone layer one hundred years to recover from the damage it has already sustained. Complicating the situation'is the fact that, while CFCs - 11 and 12, the major chemical culprits in ozone depletion, are no longer being manufactured legally, they are now being manufactured illegally and" smuggled into Florida. As well, while those CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) which have been created to replace CFCs - 11 and 12 do not deplete the ozone layer, they are potent greenhouse gases, and thus contribute to global warming. The human health impacts which result from greater exposure to ultraviolet radiation are: higher incidénce of skin cancers, particularly malignant melanoma; photo-aging of the skin; cataracts and other damage to the eyes; and damage to the immune system which results in greater susceptibility to viruses. Dr. Evans offered the following advice to those who wish to protect their health from the ozone threat: wear sunglasses which filter out UVB (ultraviolet B radiation), a hat with a wide brim (to protect the face, ears and neck), and clothing which is tightly woven. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of greater than 15, avoid the midday sun (schedule outdoor activities before 10:00 am and after 4:00 pm); and avoid using sunlamps d tanning parlours. He oked that the best and safest way for tennis players to avoid sun hazards, is to play on days when it is pouring rain. Dr. Evans sized that skin cancer is direetly related to the number of sunburns an individual ' sustains over his or her lifetime, and since we receive the greatest amount of exposure to ultraviolet radiation during our youth, it is particularly important that children avoid getting sunburns. Only one talk now remains in the Green Team talk series; this will take place on March 28th, when biologist and Harrowsmith TV personality Martin Galloway will discuss the topic "Your Lawn - Alternatives to the Chemical Fix" at 7:30 pm at the Scugog Centre. Tax relief for the disabled by H&R Block If you are disabled, the tax laws provide a number of tax breaks designed to compensate you (or someone whom you are dependent) for the extra expenses incurred as a result of your disability. In order to claim most of them, however, you must file Form T2201 Disability Tax Credit Certificate, with your return. This form, which must be completed in part by a doctor or opto- metrist, enables Revenue Canada to determine whet- her you méet the definition of "disabled". 'What does mean?
