vo ry - 2 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 13, 1996 Volunteer firefighters get service medals Close to 400 years of service with the Scugog Township volunteer Fire Department were honoured agd recognized at a ceremony last week in the municipal council chambers. Exemplary service medals were presented to 14 current and retired members of the force-- medals which recognize pot just length of time with the department, but excellence in carrying out duties as well. The 30 and 20' year medals are issued by the fedefal government and Durham MP Alex Shepherd was on hand to present them as family members, firefighters and local politicians4ooked on. In his brief remarks before the presentations, Mr. Shepherd noted that over the years, fire departments have become involved in much more than just putting out fires, nd the work is ever more dangerous all the time. "The commitment made by these volunteers is so important to communities. All the time and effagy, really makes a difference; he stated. The handsome medals, each engraved with the individual name, were presented for at least 30 years service to former Chief Jack Cook, Charlie Lewn, Ray Gould, William Harrison and Clive Boyd. the word exemplary, and said he is "proud to be associated with the department and these men over the years." He also noted the contribution to volunteer "departments by wives, gitlfriends and family mhembers of firefighters. "They have to put up with a lot," said the Chief. "I hope the federal government will find some way to honour them as well" Both Scugog Mayor Howard Hall and Ward 1 councillor Doug Moffatt, who chairs the council fire protection committee, praised the work done in the community bysthe department. "Nobody on the outside really understands the "training and the time that goes into a successful fire department," said councillor Moffatt. "We (the community) have always been able to count « on the fire department and this is very much appreciated," said the Mayor. » For at least 20 years service, medals were presented to Irv Gibson, Peter Caudle, Chester Pedzikowski, Doug Day, Harry, Vanderheul, Tom Tennyson, Chief Richard Miller, Dave Ballingall and John Foster. In total, their years of service add up to 383. Chief Miller reminded the audience that the medals are for more than just long service.
