Sports equipment bound for northern Ontario When Doug Moffatt, Councillor for Ward One in Scugog was asked last summer - to act as coordinator of * the Township's Waste Reduction Week efforts he had no idea the work would still be going on in January. Waste Reduction week was, after all, a one week program in-the second week in November! A lot has happened since then. The first unusual event was the involvement of Brewers' Retail in the Provincial effort. The week organizers adopted as a theme for 95 "Reduce, Reuse and Replay" which was a departure-from the usual Three R's. The idea being that they found the right owners. This should be a good example to people to look around at the kind of things they had stored which could be used by someone else. United Church youth volunteers Meaghan Squires, Jason Howarth, Eric Bird and Nicole' Bourgeois packed sports equipment for shipping to native kids in northern Ontario. See story above. OVERWORKS The local papers and the folks at the local "Beer Store" lent great support and the result was a massive amount of great sports equipment. The next problem was finding a new home for the material. Ken Gadsden and Moffatt loaded the material in a truck and moved it from the Beer store to a vacant storage area owned by the Mayor and a search for recipients began. A notice on the "internet" of churches brought responses from a number of locations including one from the Mennonite Relief Agency in Timmjns who were anxious to obtain some or all of the items to assist in programs they run for Aboriginal People in the Far North. Moffatt put out a request through the Ontario Trucking Association for assistance to get the material fromi*Port Perry to Timmins_where the Mennonite group will be able to move it on to individual * Native communities by air. Myers Trucking = of Peterborough has agreed to pick up the material in Port Perry once it is boxed and ready for shipping Myers will move the material to Toronto to a terminal of Manitgulin Transport who will truck the sports equipment to Timmins. home decorating To factory outlet store puis affordable OPENING SOON 1881 Scugog Street WM Port Perry (beside Cinemax) Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 6,'1996 -- 7 A.
