wm» 6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 6, 1996 Organic food a good idea for many reasons More people are eating prganic foads these days and the reasons are simple and obvious. Free of any pesticides, preservatives or chemical fertilizers, organic foods fot only taste better, they are better for you and are better for the soil and water of this planet. Bill and Penny Reid dperate an organic farm on Concession Line 8, just north of Port Perry. ffhey were the guest speakers last Thursday evening in the second of a series of talks on Scugog Green Team. Bill and Penny bought the 200.acre farm 18 years with the intention of carrying on the strawberry crop that had been grown on that farm for years. That meant spraying chemicals, and it was pot too long before Penny started to develop a skin rash which a dermatologist linked to a pesticide they were using on the berry crop. To their added Hemay, Bill found out later a well known chemical they were using on the crop had been banned years earlier in community health and promotion presented by the Clarification The January 30 edition of the Scugog Citizen carried a letter to the editor on page nine titled "Job searcher still trying to stay hopeful." The letter was signed S. Bell of Blackstock. . The editor of the Citizen would like to stress this letter was NOT from Sharyl-Anne Bell of Blackstock, who is employed by Paula Lishman and is a volunteer with Guides. Our apologies to Sharyl-Anne Bell for any mis- understanding or embarrassment the letter may have caused. OVER 6000 SQ.FT, of SHOWROOM Furniture, Appliances, TV, VCR and more! It has since been banned in Canada, Bill atold the audience at the meeting last Thursday evening. They soon decided to turn their farm into one completely free of pesticides (fungicides, herbicides, mitecides), Today, not only can make they claim their produce is chemical free, they have membership in the international Organic Crop Improvement Association to back up that claim. To qualify, their land had to be free of all pesticides * and chemical fertilizers for three years, the soil and water was thoroughly tested, a two person team of inspectors made several visit to the farm, and O.C.LA. inspectors have the right to make un-announced visits to the farm. "There was a huge amount of paperwork, forms to be filled out," said Bill. "At first we found'it (the testing and the questioning) very invasive," Penny added. But it was more than worth it to be able to have the OCI A. designation for their farm and the produce they grow. a Buying organic mea s safer and better tasting vod on the plate. It also helps to prevent | soil = crosion, contamination of water supplies, saves energy, protects farm owners and workers, and helps to sustain small farms since most organic fatms are independently owned and operated by families. Does .arganic produce cost more for the consumer? Yes, Bill said, mainly because it is more labour intensive. But he noted that the store price of a head of lettuce does not include "hidden" costs such as subsidies to farms or the cost of maintaining roads to get that lettuce to markets hundreds or thoysands of miles aways "You can walk into a bar and for $10 you'll get'two- ° beers. At our farm, that same $10 will buy two broccoli heads and we'll give you change," he skid. He is optimistic for the future of arganic farming as more and more people are concerned about what's in the food they eat and the state of health of the planet GO-FER IT! "Our customers have been 80 very, supportive, yet for some of them their biggest fear is that we as organic farmers will not survive," she said.
