Bantams lead series The Port Perry Bantam #1 team, sponsored by Country Style Donuts in Manchester, commenced their quest'for the All Ontario Championship on January 26 at the Scugog Arena. The first two rounds of play - offs are for the right to be the Lakeshore League representative in the OMHA Bantam 'A' Level Category. In the first round Port's opponents are those pesky Muskies from Lindsay in a best of five series. The other series pits Cobourg against the Oshawa Redwings. The winners of these two series will play - off to decide who moves on to the OMHA playdowns. If Game One is any indication of the outcome of this series, Port are in for an easy go of it, as they steam rolled over Lindsay by a score of 10 - 1. Right from the start of the game Port came out of the gates with a roar. They did not give Lindsay a chance to get into this game at all. Port scored two in the first, added five in the second and capped of this fine performance with three in the third. Casey VanSchagen was on a mission as he led all scorers with a hat trick and two assists. Not to be outdone, Scott Jeffrey also played a solid game in scoring a hat trick as well. , The other goal scorers were Derek Tindall, Troy Campbell, Dillan Weber Novice action Pearce Auction Novice went to rival Stouffville's arena on Friday, January 26. Our gang came out flying and kept the pressure on resulting in many chances in the first 3 minutes. Ashley Lucas led the team with great two - way play. Keenan Geer was everywhere. Michael Lycett, Danny Halward, Tyson Savage, and Kyle Mullins were great at forechecking. The defensive efforts of Shane Jeffrey, Nelson Langmaid, Taylor Churchill, and Derek Goreski broke up much of Stouffville's playmaking in the neutral zone. Mark Carnaghan was sharp in net beaten only once on a tricky deflection. Pearce Auction controlled 90% of the game but Stouffville squeaked out the 1-0 victory. Sports Corner by Todd Healey Ah, Super Bowl Sunday. The one day of the year I can call my house my own. It's a sacred day really (you don't think football is played on Sunday by accident, do you?) Weeks before the event, I begin announcing to the household that this is to be my day and that I expect compliance to my wishes. I read a script of said wishes to heighten the effect. "Hear ye, hear ye Wifey and Wee 'uns. Thou shalt begone with Ye on the festive Sunday between the hours of four and nine". Lo goes the plan anyway. [ attempt this every year to no avail. Something always comes up to spoil my solitude: The kids are sick and can't go out in the cold, unexpected company - you name it. But not this year. I cheerfully shooed the wee 'uns out the door with their mother (who had that intrinsically female look on her face that said I owed her big time) and set about arranging my party for one. First I set up a spread of junk food large enough to send Susan Powter to the looney bin. Chips, popcorn, peanuts and pretzels were all poured into bowls and strategically arranged in order of saltiness and texture in a semi-circle within easy reach. Next a cooler was fortified with beer and pop and placed in such a way as to double as a footrest. Finally, pillows were stripped from all the beds and made to resemble an impregnable fortress on the sofa. Time to settle in for an afternoon of heaven. As for the Game? Well, it was another Super sleeper until the fourth quarter when the Steelers threw a scare into Dallas, but corner Larry Brown's second interception of the game sealed the Dallas victory. Barry Switzer, head coach of the Cowboys, again did his best impression of a village idiot with his refusal to alter his game plan when it became obvious that the Cowboy offence was stalling. If not for Brown's heroics, whose two picks turned into 14 points, the AFC would have boasted a Super Bowl Champion after a 12 year drought. However, something of more jnportance than the game took place on Sunday for me. I learned something about myself. As the first half wore on, I found myself fiddling with the remote, bored of my snacks, and glancing around the empty house. It was too quiet. No running, giggling girls, no yelling "Be careful, you're gonna spill Daddy's beer", and no fighting over-who got to watch the game and who got to watch Barney. Being the only member of an exclusive club isn't much fun if no one else even wants to join. Sigh. I spent the rest of the game wallowing, as a friend of mine says, in my own insignificance. Reminds me of the saying, "Be careful what you wish for because it might come true". and Jon Froats. Leading the assist parade was Dave Gainey and Troy Campbell with three each, Glenn McCready with two and singles going to Dillan Weber and Adam Hobbs. Mike McLennan drew the assignment between the pipes and played a. solid game when called on to make some tough stops. Game two of the series was played on January 28, at the Lindsay Rec Centre. This was to be a closer game on the scoresheet as Lindsay dug a little deeper this particular "Super - Bowl" night to try and give themselves a win at home. 'Luck was not on their side as once again Port rallied to a 4 - 1 win. Leading off the scoring in the first period was Adam Hobbs being assisted by his linemate Derek Tindall and Jon Froats. Not much later Troy Campbell scored after Dave Gainey and Scott Jeffrey's efforts put the puck right in front. Next up for Port was Scott Jeffrey scoring on a nice pass from Troy Campbell and Dave Gainey. This gave Port a 3 goal lead heading into the second period. Lindsay came close a couple of times to get on the scoreboard but Ryan Fraser came up with the saves. But finally Lindsay got a break and scored their one and only goal of the game. Heading into the third period, Lindsay was not going to give in to defeat until the bitter end. The Port Perry defence stymied all their efforts and near the end of the game with the Lindsay goalie on the bench Danny Lyons received the puck from Troy Campbeil and Casey VanSchagentand nicely sent her sliding into the empty net with only a minute left to go: The Port Perry Country Style Bantams now lead the series 2 - 0 and should hopefully cap things off nicely with a win at home Wednesday night, January 31 at 7:30 P.M. Don't miss the exciting action. Come out and support this local téam as they take on the Huskies in the third game of the series. Isles up on Lindsay The Port Perry Midget B Islanders played host to Lindsay on Friday January 26th for the first game in their best of five playoffs and this game was absolutely great as the Islanders skated to a 6-2 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series. This game had a bit of everything as all the players were up for it and really put on a show for their home town crowd. The crowd was really in this game as well as the peanuts were flowing (thanks again Lloyd) and a very appreciative crowd quite often applauded a good stop by Islander goalie Brian Bickmore, who was hot on this night, a good passing play by attacking Islander forwards or a good defensive effort by the Islander defense. The Islanders were skating, hitting, backchecking, passing and really going all out as they kept Lindsay off balance for the entire game. Total team effort usually means a team win and this was just that. The first period had the Islanders take immediate control of the game as they took a 2-0 lead. First it was Todd Parry from Gavin Baxter and Trevor Smith and then Scott Heffern from Todd Parry and Chris Drury. The Lindsay squad did have their chances in this period but as stated earlier Islés goalie Brian Mester transmission all Canadian TOWING AVAILABLE W PAY WHILE YOU DRIVE (| Call (905) 2985-8376 CANADA'S LARGEST 100 CENTRES COAST to COAST W SAME DAY SERVICE (in most cases) 3 FREE MULTICHECK & ROAD TEST BW AUTOMATIC & STANDARDS, CLUTCHES & DIFFERENTIALS IB SPECIALISTS IN IMPORTS, 4x4's, FRONT WHEEL DRIVE TRANSMISSIONS - Including Front Axle Repairs B NATIONWIDE WRITTEN (Vehicle Ownership) WARRANTY AVAILABLE* ¢ ("Available on most cars with Butomatic transmissions) Your local Mister Transmission is independently owned & operated = 5% Approval) Bickmore was having a hot game and came up with, numerous big stops. The second period opened with Lindsay making a bit of a game of it asthey finally got one past "Bic" to make it a 2-1 game. But that would be as close as they would get as-the Islanders exploded for three quick goals to take a 4 mmanding 5-1 lead. Sgoring for the Iles in the second period were Adam Hunter, Todd Parry and Matt Phillips with assists going to Ashley Van Shejvan, Adam Smith with two, Scott Heffern, Ryan Puckrin and Adam Hunter. The third period had the teams exchange goals as Matt Phillips from Adam Hunter rounded out the Islander scoring. Final' score, Islanders 6, Lindsay 2 and Port takes-a 1-0 lead in the series. Also' deserving mention for good work are Mike Morden who made a few Bobby Orr type rushes, Aaron Levy who had the Lindsay goalie shaking as he let go with a few howitzers from the left wing, if he could only hit the net, and Noah Dorland who found out just how painful making a skate save can be. The Islanders next travel to Lindsay on Tuesday, . January 30th and then return home on Ground Hog Day February 2nd with a 9:15pm start time. Come on out and be entertained and" help support these local boys. Goalies sparkle It was a goaltender's battle when Larocque Electric and Scala Brothers Auto Wreckers clashed January 27th. Excellent passing plays by the Larocque forwards led them to a hard fought 4-3 victory, but were stopped many times by. Scala Goalie John Barton. Finding the net for Larocque was A. Kenny, who also had an assist, J. Schembri, who had 2 goals and A. Kenny. Also with assists were J. Danilko, G. Ingram, J. Rogalski, and A. Lycett. Bulging the mesh for Scala was M. Smart, B. Joliquoer and G. Thompson. A. Hutchinson and-S. Fischer played a great game between the pipes for Larocque.
