ww 22 Scugog Citizen_-- Tuesday, January 30, 1996 Skating takes Sarah to Milan, Italy by Heather McCrae Sarah Chapman has never flown before but she's flying high these days. The 17 year old Greenbank resident is looking forward to a trip to Milan, Italy in March for a World Precision Skating cofnpetition. Sarah, a member of the Port Perry Skating Club, is also one of 29 skaters on "Ice Fyre" the Whitby Senior Precision Team. Recognized by the Canadian Figure Skating Association as a National 'team, it was chosen by the organization to compete in Italy. To cover costs, each team member has to raise $1700. Sarah is currently being sponsored by Emmerson Insurance. The Greenbank Lions' Club, of which Sarah's mother is a member, is hosting a' traditional Pub Night on February 9 as a fundraiser for the talented skater. Sprving up a variety of international beers, the fun evening begins at 7 p.m. at the Greenbank Hall and offers euchre, darts and dancing to a DJ. Tickets are $5. each and cover the first drink. Precision skating is new to Sarah. Having always competed in singles events before, she saw her first demonstration of precision skating when the novice team was a guest at the PPFSC's carnival a couple of years ago. "I was impressed by what I saw," she told the Citizen and last summer decided to try out for the team and, consequently, was chosen on the Senior team. "I felt it was quite an honour to make it (on the team)" she said. The Ice Fyre team is made up of skaters throughout Durham Regién and Peterborough who range in age from 16 to their mid-twenties. Currently the team ranks third in Canada but is hopeful to better thig at the Canadian Championships in Hamilton April 4-6. In addition, the team has been invited to skate at Ottawa's "Winterlude" in February. It's nobody's fault. It's the same old story: the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Teams like the Edmonton Oilers are turning into farm teams for others like the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks. Big teams, big markets and, most of all, big dough. Ultimately, the team with the green wins. Take Chicago for example, and the Keith Tkachuk a The Jets did not want to pay Tkachuk and Ch steps in and offers $6 million. The word was Hawk's owner Big Bill Wirtz did the deal himself because he was ticked off at Winnipeg for backing out of a deal after a handshake agreeme get riled up. nt. Big Bill is a bad guy to Anyway, he gave Keith everything, AND the kitchen sink. The Jets were forced to match the offer. Wait until Jason Arnott of the Oiler: is 26-27, the same thing will happen, if the Oilers are'still in Edmonton. He'll end up going to the big markets because they can afford to pay him. These are the guys people want to see, but let's face it, when you're drawing 9,000 - to come from. 10, 000 fans a game, where's the dough going When the big guys want players, they get them. For instance, when the New York Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in more than half a century, they had seven former Edmonton Oilers on their club. There are several factors which are contributing to the direction the NHL has been taking. Next week, I'l fill you in on what some of them are and explain how out of whack today's salaries are. On Ice Two, Fred Ford was to face Cam Porter. Cam, who is also the president of the Blackstock Fishing Club, was away on Fishing Club business. He left the broont in the very capable hands of Dave Shearman. Dale VanCamp, subbing for Cam, electrified everybody with his.cool drawsshots. Fred Ford could be heard whining cpnstantly throughout the game about the ice, about the stones ahd about everything he could think of as he was clobbered 17- 3. His team of Tony Duivesteyn, Bill Shortridge and Dave Luckhardt in his' defense said he wasn't here last week and is out of practice. On Ice Three Todd Doyle smacked Richard bird with a 10-2 ubbing. IGA Bantams have no trouble in this one The IGA Bantams took on the Uxbridge No Just Cards Sunday in Sunderland and we were hot this Bantam HL game. Uxbridge was on the - power play but we held them scoreless and then it was our turn for the power play and they held us off. Jeremy Pare had a good shot and Chad Lance and Joel .VanCamp almost scored on some nice passes in the 1st but both teams were scoreless. Chris Thompson came up with some awesome catches to keep Uxbridge off the scoreboard. The second period was amazing. Uxbridge came up with a goal at 7:44 which Chris Thompson had no chance on. 14 seconds later Pete McKitterick scored on a breakaway with his Dad encouraging him from the sidelines. Reid McTaggart picked up the assist on Pete's goal. ; A scramble in front of the net resulted in another goal at 7:06 with Chad Lance poling it in and Ken Ellis and Jeremy assisting. On a pass up from Lawrence Cook and Ken, Pete picked up his 2nd goal at 5:13 to make it 3-1. Our 4th goal came on a nice shot from the blue line off Jon Sanders stick with Chad and Murphy Irvine getting assists on this one. We weren't done yet for the 2nd period. Pete gave the puck to Kam Cooper who then passed to Lawrence and he scored at 1:32 and it was 5-1. We picked up 2 more goals in the third period. Jeremy finally got past the defenceman and scored at 4:45 with a great shot. At 2:29 with Kam and * Lawrence assisting, Pete' McKitterick picked up his 3rd goal with Kam and Lawrence assisting, Pete McKitterigk picked up his , 3rd goal of the game for his 1st hat trick. He received a standing ovation from the crowd and his proud Dad. Even Coach VanCamp threw his Detroit Red Wing hat on the ice for Pete (he'did retrieve it pretty quick though). Pete was awarded Player of the Game for his efforts. P.S. He has to eat waffles and syrup before every game from now on. Lawrence Cook had a great game with 1 goal and 3 assists and did he ever tie up those Uxbridge forwards. Nick Ostafichuk, Mark Delaney and Steve Martyn did some great work on our defence lines. Way to play the game guys.
