Now. that he's home again, safe and warm, after being plucked off Lake Simcoe's black ice in the midst of a fierce storm, the Greenbank man feels he could have been home sooner if he had been better prepared. Last Friday morning when Brian metégup with his" buddy, Barney Joosten, and a couple of other friends, they headed out to their ice hut on Lake Stmcoe. When they ran out of propane in the afternoon, Barney set out for shore to refuel, taking the two men with him, leaving Brian behind. But a fierce winter storm prevented hit from returning. Brian haggis. LX XX] i "Barney tried to come back on a three-wheeler, but without snow on the ice for traction, and the high winds, it just spun him around and he was getting nowhere" Brian told the Citizen over the weekend Late in the afternoon, with no Barney or propane in sight, Brian was getting colder by the minute as the winds lashed at the ice hut. And he began to wonder if something had happened to his friend. Around eight that night, a worried Carol called her husband on the cellular. Brian told her he was holed up in the ice hut, no sign of his friend, and he was getting colder by the minute. Then Carol lost contact with her husband as the phone's batteries died. Carol frantically called the York Regional Police. The Sutton Fire Department orrish and his wife Carol. ¢ Close call on Simcoe also summoned a rescue team on a hovercraft to the area. Meanwhile, back in the hut, a frigid Brian made a small fire in the propane heater by lighting bits and pieces of cardboard, paper and ajsmall piece of 2x4 left behind and was able to warm his hands and feet a little, preventing frostbite. Near midnight the Canadian Forces base in Trenton summoned a helicopter to the scene. When Brian saw it fly over a couple of times he realized searchers would never spot the dark hut on the black ice. So, when it flew over again he flapped the hut door, lined with white styrofoam, open and closed # This was enough to catch the eye of the searchers. After being lifted off the ice and driven to a warm fire truck on shore, Brian drove home at 5:30 a.m. to a very relieved wife. 'While Brian has praise for the efforts of the York Regional Police, the OPP, Sutton Fire Department and the rescuers from the Trenton Air Base, he feels his rescue could have been sooner if he had taken flares with him. "They (flares) should be standard equipment when you go out on the ice" he said. : And Carol has ordered a reflective vest for her husband, too. Will he go ice fishing again? : "Sure, as soon as Barney calls, we'll go - but we'll be better prepared this time" he said. nirim House Pub Evenin the middle of winter, there's lots happening at Port Perrys Pub.
