'prepared Expectations were high as the Peewee Legionaires took to the ice this weekend then they hosted a Peewee A Tournament. The calibre of the teams was top notch. They came from all over southern Ontario and one from Rochester. Competition was heated and the scores were close including three overtime games. Finally as the ice chips settled, St. Thomas and the hometown Legionaires faced off at centre ice to determine the champion. The Legionaires for the tournament by playing an exhibition game Friday against Orleans. They fell behind 2-1 in the first but came back to tie it on a wrist shot by Jason Whitworth. The game settled into a sparring match in the second with the Legionaires playing a physical g#me as Dean VanCamp, David Justynski, and Grant Lumbermen prevail 6-1 solid goaltending by Brady Gray and a good twoway effort by Travis Black, Scugog defeated the Lions by a 6-1 score. In a replay of last week's game, an exciting 6-5 win by Scugog Lumbe¥, they met the Lions again for an early morning match. Coach John Lennox has his Lions skating well and playing much better hockey, but they cfuldn't keep up with the Scugog Lumber boys this time. Led by Gary Penstone's first and second goals of the season, Travis opened the scoring in the first after a good effort by Lucas Fraser. With 43 seconds left in the period, Eric Fenton tied the game with help from David Storer. The second period Atom House League Whitby Auto Wreckers took on Laurentian Bank Saturday morning. Whitby scored 1st at 2:41 of the 1st period. Ryan May picked upjthe goal with assists going to Justin Sanders and Luke Pilkey. Great team work guys. Laurentian came back with a goal in the 2nd when Jessie Mischitian went in alone on a breakaway and scored with 39 seconds left, Laurentian scored 2 unassisted goals in the frd; one from Tyler artin at 8:44 and another from Rob Scriber at 6:41. There was good end'to end hockey in this game. Laurentian's goalie Tyler Webb was breaking in a new blocker during this game and it must be a lucky one as they won the game 3-1. We'll see next week as Whitby takes on Laurentian again at 7:15 ¢ on Saturday. was all Scugog, with Gary tapping one into an empty net after a wrist shot from Alex Nicolaou hit the post. Good hustle by by Michael McIntyre got the puck to Alex, who shot from the blue line. Lucas and Travis teamed up again, with the goal being put in by Luke this time to make it 8-1. With Travis in the penalty box, Kevin Gloster - and Teddy Howarth put great pressure on the Lions in their own end. The hustle paid off and Kevin set up Teddy for a short-handed goal. Gary got his second of the game from the, slot with a nice lspin around shot thdt beat Robert Larmer to make it 5-1. Travis then rounded out the scoring with his second of the e. These two Bams will face each other again this Saturday at 6:00 am. Hooker took knocking the players to the ice. In the third, the Legionaires took control of the game as Dane Gray parked to the side of the net, finished off some excellent passing by Mark Blakely and Jason. The game was put out of reach by Dean who was assisted by Braden Tarbotton and Matt MacMaster. The boys had a well deserved 4-2 win. Game 1 - Bradford vs. Port Perry . With some early pressure by Bradford, Carl Evans turns Orleans was called upon to make some big saves in the first period and the period ended up a scoreless tie. In the second period the Legionaires took the lead when Dean shot the puck into the net from*Braden who dipsy-doedled out from behind the net. Tim Jones was stalwart on the blueline kéepirig the puck in the Bradford zone. As throughout the tournament, the penalty rday for Legionaires killing of Steven Wygerde, Chris Skerratt, and Scotty Brownson was very effective in stymying Bradford's powerplay. Near the end of the game David moved in from the point to score our second goal. Mark wrapped it up when he scored an open net goal, assisted by Tim. Carl had a hard earned shutout in a 3-0 victory. Game 2 - Stouffville vs. Port Perry In this game the Legionaires got off to a good start as Chris scored from in front of.the net assisted by Scott and Grant. Scotty scooted in from the blueline to pick up the short side giving the Legionaires a 2-0 lead. He was assisted by Tim. Closing the scoring were Dean, assisted by Matt, and Chris Monsma was outstanding in goal coming up with big saves to keep the game out of reach. Final score was 4-1 for the Legionaires. Championship Game - St. Thomas: vs. Port Perry St. Thomas got off to a, quick start as they forechecked and forced a turnover to score a goal 15 seconds into thé gamg. They kept up the steady pressure and before the first period was up, the hustling St. Thomas squad had a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Legionaires didn't get into the game until halfway through the second period when Dean managed to * get to the net but hit the post. The Legionaires did not give up and hustled right to the end. Congratulations to Deah VanCamp who was the recipient of the MVP ~-- award for the Legionaires. Final score, St. Thomas 4 - Port Perry,0. In addition to the hard play and success of the team and fine leadership of the coaching staff, the parents and organizers who provided encour- agement and ran a very successful tournament should be congratulated. Brooklin wins A title This past Friday through Sunday saw the local Broomball league host their annual tournament in Sunderland with 14 men and 6 ladies' teams in attendance. When the smoke had cleared Port Perry came home with half of the winnings through the 'A' and 'B' divisions. Play got underway Friday evening with Brooklin takihg to the ice against the Wild Turkeys of the Cannington league, with the Bruins emerging victorious by a 3-0 score. The Bruins netted 1 in the opefiing period and added to the total with 2 more in quick succession in the second half. They were followed right after by the Blackstock Brewers who snuck past the Cannington Rahms 2-1 after Blackstock had spotted the Rahms the first goal. The Homelife Swampers kept the Port Perry streak alive as they got by Oshawa's Lingar squad with a 5-2 decision. The Swamp had built up a 3 goal lead by early in the second period and coated from there. The local league finally suffered its first defeat, albeit a close one as the MOB out of Oshawa squeaked past The Framer's Gallery 2-1. The Framer's had scored first only to see the MOB get their 2 before the first perfiod had Rounding out play for Friday, Trader Sam's fought back from a 1 goal deficit late in the game to fire in 8 quick ones te. down the Snafu of Cannington by a 4-2tally. ° Saturday morning bright and early saw the Scorpions go down to defeat at the hands of the Warriors in a close 1-0 overtime battle, the first of a number on the weekend. The Scorpions had a misfortune of having to play just a few short hours later and found hemselves on the wrong nd of a 2-1 score thus being eliminated. They were in tough against the Snafu and lost it with just 19 seconds left to play in regulation time. Trader Sam's eliminated the Warriors by a 3-0 count thereby gaining entrance into the 'A' semi-final. In what was one of the better played games of the whole weekend the Bruins put ~ Blackstock out by a 3-2 cognt in double overtime, gaining them entrance to the other 'A' semi. The Framer's continued on their winning ways on the 'B' side as they pulled off a closg 2-1 win over Lingar. The' MOB downed the Swampers late Saturday evening and would then play Brooklin on Sunday morning. The Framer's got to their final by winnin the last game of Saturday night, defeating the Rahms with & 3-0 blanking. Sunday morning saw the start of the 'A' side semis and try as they might, Trader Sam's went into double overtime only to drop a 3-2 decision to the Sharks out of Cannington. The other semi saw: Brooklin blank the MOB to the tune of a 2.0 tally thereby earning a spot in the final. In the mens' 'B' final it was the Framer's Galler, emerging the winners wit a 1-0 nail biter over the Snafu.A short while later in the 'A' final the Bruins climbed to a 8-0 lead over the Sharks before allowing a single with just over a minute to play for a 3-1 championship score. On the ladies side of the house the Port Perry squad didn't fare so well losing to Antrim 2-1, and CA Steel of Sudbury 5-0 and thusly being eliminated. In the 'B' side final it was. the Sunderland Misfits of the Cannington league beating the rival Antrim team 3-0. In the 'A' final it was the Panthers of Barrie scoring late in the second period to defeat CA Steel 1-0. Super Bowl party Watch the' Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowbosy battle it out for the Super Bowl on a giant TV screen at .ended., Scugog Centre this Sunday afternoon. Tickets for this Super Bowl Party which starts at game time, will be on sale at the door, but there is no charge for PP Minor Hockey players, their parents or members of the Scugog Hockey (Mens) League: Proceeds from the event will ~ be used by Central Ontario Wolves Major hockey team to attend the Air Canada midget tournament next season in Calgary.
