Rd » | or 24 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, January 16,1996 & Musher can't wait for the race to start by Heather McCrae Port Perry will be going to the dogs again this weekend as the local Kinsmen Club holds its third anpual Kinsmen Sled Dog Derby. Sponsored by H&R Block, the popular event begins 12 Noon on Saturday and Sunday, January 20 & 21 , starting 'at the bottom of Queen Street, near the Latcham Centre. One musher who's anxious to come back again this year is 40-year old John Liversage of rural Stouffville. Not a newcomer to the Kinsmen Sled Dog Derby, John placed third in the six-dog, race two years ago and. participated last year as well. ; But last year Mother Nature interfered, making it unsafe for man afid beast, and the races were cancelled. "The. trail just lifted because of the high north winds and blowing snow, wiping out the markers, making it impossible for the dogs to follow the trail". Frustrating for the mushers too, as they alwdys want good conditions and are continually concerned about the safety and health of their dogs", he ; said. "The dogs are the athletes. We're the coach, manager and trainer, but the dogs are the ones that make everything happen out there" he told the Citizen during an interview at his home. John's been racing for 8 years now but it was back in 1982 when.the racing bug first bit hin. Living in Banff then, he acquired his first dog, "Festis", a malamute/coyote. Given a harness, John make a 'plywood sled and "Festis" would pull the groceries home, a ritual they both enjoyed: | Later he built a sled from discarded hockey sticks and began training "Festis", gearing him for weight , pulling. In February 1986 the dog and his master competed in a big weight pull near Lake Placid, NY, and were thrilled to place fifth. * Competing against some of the best mushers and dogs in North America, that placing was a real thrill, he said. * After moving to the Stouffville area he picked up-'a team mate for "Festis" and has been racing since. "I really enjoy the: sport and the people I've met" he told the Citizen. "We all have a lot in common" he' grinned. Jamie McNab, a well- known musher from Little Britain, is a good friend of John's and is helping the Kinsmen Club organize the races this weekend. 'Employed in the'seasonal work . of landscape construction, John divides his time now betweenshis young family and the dogs. - Recently he and his canine athletes competed in the 4- dog open race at Copeland Forest. "Most mushers go, there and some of the world's t dogs were there too", he said. Out of 47 teams John was satisfied to place inithe top half. John's looking forward to this weekend, not use it's the only race sch®uled but it's a much different race. ) "It's more of an 4 event. With a main street start and finish, and the throngs of people out as well, it shows the whole town is involved" he said. His wife, Rowena, will be here cheering their team on, too. If you see John this weekend and get talking about sled dog racing, be forewarned. You might find yourself becoming hooked on the sport, too. Spectators are asked to refrain from bringing their pets to the races as they may distract the mushers and their teams. Goreski nips Lindsay 3-2 Friday night saw Lindsay PeeWees come to town for the final game of the regular season. The "Goreski" boys put forth a total team effort with lots of good solid checking and two way hustle by everyone. Lindsay got on the board early in the first period but aftef that it was all Port Perry. « Half-way through the first period Adam Moynes evened the score, netting 'one from a pass out from behind the Det. from Billy Carr. Port, wired the play with relentless checking by Ian Garnett, Matt Skerratt and Matt Cracknell with Lindsay working hard just to get out of their own end. The second period was again all Port Perry with Mike Lefort, Matt McGarry, Trevor Weisflock and Darren Royle all creating numerous scoring opportunities but unable to put one in the Lindsay net. Early into the third period Mike Lefort was rewarded with a goal, assists going to Matt Skerratt and Ian Garnett and just three .minutes later Matt Cracknell made it 3-1 with an assist going to Ian Garnett. Our Blueliners held their ground throughout the entire game with Mike Wadsworth handing out more than one wake-up call. Tyler Houthuys with some good checks along the boards. Scott Duncan and John Burnett both had some good shots from the point and Joel Thompson, who alternates between forward and defense, had a strong game on defense. The Goreski goaltenders, although not overworked, both had strong performances with Darcy Stephens robbing Lindsay on a clean breakaway in the first period and Mike Koury coming up big with a pad save on a breakaway in the third. Final score Port Perry 3, Lindsay 2.
