Sianing| here Is priced right, too. 4 \ RIDE charges decline The number of people charged with drinking and driving by the Durham wRIDE program dropped by almost 50 perjcent this year. During the' six week program RIDE officers charged 13 people with drinking offenses, compared with 25 last year, according to Sgt. Rick Bates, who co- ordinates the Region's program each year. Officers checked 29,800 drivers this year (3 per cent more than last year) and checked 139 people with the roadside breath test. They issued 44 temporary suspensions of 12 hours, down 19 per cent from 54 issued last year. While the 'number of . drinking drivers nabbed in the i RIDE program dropped, regular Durham Police 'patrols during the same period resulted in 66 impaired driving charges, almost the same as the 68 charges of this kind last season. In a statement issued last week by the Kinsmen Club, financial constraints were cited-as the main reason for opting out ofthe Ice Palace project this - winter. "The decision was reached after thorough discussion, and was reached due to the current financial circumstances of The Ontario Municipal Board will open a hearing on May 1 into a proposed sale of vacant land at the corner of Old Scugog Street and Greensborough Drive in Blackstock. Ice Palace project Editor's Note: In the Jan. 3 issue of the Scugog Gitizen there was a front page article stating the Ice Palace would indeed be open this winter. ' That information was provided to us just prior to deadline last 'week by the Township/ Chamber of Commerce tourism and development officer who got,the information from a member of the Kinsmen ' Club. The Club * members apparently voted. that evening (after the Citizen had gone to press) to suspend the Ice Palace operation this winter. Cops hired to crack down on snowmobiles from page one The cost of hiring two off duty police officers to enforce the snowmobile by- law and lay charges is . $100 per officer for a minimum of three hours. Council will not disclose what days or time of days the enforcement will be stepped up, but it will, start as soon as possible. A conviction for improper use of a snowmobile in Port Perry carries a hefty fine and the Township will ask the judge to asgess costs against the accused. In a lengthy discussion on this issue Monday afternoon, councillors indicated the by-law infractions are taking part in all areas of Port Perry and at all hours of the Say and night. YEARD .
