Applicants from all | over the province applied to get their team into this prestigious tourney, but the list was cut down to eight teams; Tt Perry, Stouffville, Cobourg, Uxbridge, Vaughan, Penetang, Trenton, and Bracebridge. We' first faced the green and yellow from Uxbridge. Do they have ugly unies, or what? The lone marker was scored on the power play, hy Rob Murphy. Carl Phoenix made a nice, pass to Murf, who , one-timed it, into the net, high. Rob has soft, soft hands. This was the only goal we needed, as John Babcock was spectacular in the pipes, kicking all the rubber away, to earn the shutout. What a performance! The Bridge must have been frustrated with John. This was a good defensive game, and the fellows on the blueline 'all played well. This put us on the 'A' side of the tournament."We went and got some breakfast, and said hello to/some kind of bear 'on Scugog Street, before the next, game. We faced Stouffville. Mike Phoenix got the start, and played outstanding, making saves Jacques Plante couldn't even make. Both teams were playing hard, but no one could beat either tender. There were some treat hits in this one. Clarkey knocked the opposition around as usual, with some bonecrushers. We went to overtime, with one player being remowed each minute. There was still no score until it got down to 2 on 2. Murphy and Strickert were out there, playing their hearts out, when Rob picked up. the puck in the opposition's corner, gave the Stouffville defenseman the ole 'how's she goin', The Pineridge Sports Midgets had reason to celebrate Saturday after winning the local tournament sponsored by Van and Truck World. See story for all the great detalls on three solid wins. Team members front from left: Jay Strickert, Carl Phoenix, Mike Phoenix, John Babcock, Kevin Hobbs, Jeff Clarke, Robt. Gracle. In back from left manager Steve Connors, assistant coach Jim Dexter, Jason Logan, John Froats, Derek Tindall, Nick Skerratt, Kevin Grey, Colin Laird, Rob Murphy, Daryl McEnaney, Mike Heasman and head coach Warren Geer. Not present for photo Tom Chambers and Brad Shanley. Netminder John Babcock of Port Perry and forward Brian Morrow of Penetang were named MVPs In the championship game. Grant Laird of Port, Perry Minor Hockey made the MVP and medal presentations to both teams. faked the goalie, and sniped it, top corner. What a goal! We were flying! Rob then proceeded to do the soccer run, until he was mobbed by the rest of the team. i We were one more step closer to reaching our goal: to win our tournament. We had to beat Penetang in the championship game. Jason Logan got us started with a lovely goal in the first. He said "I just shot it as hard as I could, and the darn thing went in." Lovely! Jay Strickert and Carl Phoenix assisted Hulk Logan. Perletang came back. with two markers early, in the second, and had us 2-1. n scored again, this time on the power play. Kevin Hobbs passed it behind the net to Darryl McEnaney. Mac pushed it between two pairs of legs, under a stick and over a fallen player, out front to Logan, who banged it home. Picture perfect power play! Great passing. It wus all tied up, when Kevin G-Ray scored off faceoff in Penetang's end. Unassisted. The goalie didn't have a change. Kev's the greatest. It stayed 3-2 for us for the rest of the second and the entire third to give us the championship! We were going bananas. Babcock had another great game in goal and came up big time after time. Way to go John! Babber received MVP honours. Take a closer look in this' week's player profile. : "John is a second year goalie, who has reflexes like you wouldn't believe. John says "Well, I try my hardest when I'm in net, and think that really helps me out." Babber never gives up, always giving that second, third and fourth effort. John's a friendly lad who will clean your windshield, change your oil, or fill up your gas tank with a smile. John's a team player who likes to win and loves to have fun out.on the ice. That's what it's all about. Thanks to John Froats and Derek Tindall for coming up from the Bantam team to help patrol the ice. Great hustle guys! Also thanks to Richie LeFort, the tournament convener. P.M.A. (Player's Mom's Association) is also thanked for running the food booth in the hall and making the best sandwiches we've ever tasted. They were great! Thanks to everyone else who helped in any way. It is very much appreciated. Remember to come out and watch the Midget 1's, on Monday nights at 9:15.
