Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 39,1995 --33 4 The heat goes on at Kawartha Downs As starter Ernie Brown released the field for the ninth race on Thursday night (August 24), the wings of the starting gate would not close. This left Brown and driver Woodward in a dilemma. Woodward said "we were going too fast to run and get out the gate so we went on to stay ahead of the horses. Moving around the first turn I was watching for the people along the outside fence and the horses behind us. I looked around one and the steering wheel went to the inside and the wing clipped a light standard or two." As the gate swung into the stretch, Woodward accelerated and sped away from the field. Second time around he got control of his vehicle and wheeled off the track without incident. The problem 'arose when a belt which drives the motor that moves the wings in and out had broken and there was no 'way to close the wings. The Fun Mixed Ball League (that's FMBL for short) finished the season Sunday with an A division showdown between Antrim House and Suzy's Travel. This game went into extra innings and Suzy's won by a single run. After the game both teams decided to mingle for a group picture because that's the way the players wanted It. Antrim Is coached by Bob Douglas (far left) and Suzy's by Larry Page (tar right). Minor Softball update by Dave Dalton, PPMS President The local softball is new items and programs this year starting with our skills | board of directors. Also just prior to the championship slowly winding down with our house league championships completed on the weekend of the 18th and our rep teams at the minor level all taking place this past weekend. As well the rep teams were involved in their OASA championships in the last two weeks with the Legion Squirts winning their p in t and evaluation day. Run at all three locales it seemed to be well received and next year will see some refinements. Also this season we had a number of youths go through the junior development clinics to earn their stripes as umpiring officials. This also will see'some fine tuning next year to h this program as well. the 'C' Division and the Merchant Juniors winning silver at the B' level. Congratulations are extended to both squads for another fine showing of Port Perry's fastball prowess. With the squirt's triumph that now gives this association six provincial champs in the last five years. Of course, if it were not for our house league we wouldn't be afforded this fine showing, and for that I want to thank the players, their parents, the coaches and conveners and the' numerous other volunteers it takes to run a program of this size, and magnitude. We had close to the same number of registrants this season as we did last year and it afforded us to run with fout teams at the T-Ball level and five in 7-8 and 9-10 Mites. Again we had competition with our neighbours to the north from * Greenbank and Seagrave and amalgamated all three areas to "put together three youth boy squads and four youth girls' teams. When it came to the house league championships we were afforded a number of good, entertaining games. The children showed off their abilities and skills learned to date and from the number of smiling faces enjoyed the day as well as the medals hanging around their necks. This newspaper carried some of those scores and highlights in last week's copy. We endeavored to provide a few As well as the on field help for the house leagues there were many in the background whose faces we do not always see. Those receiving additional thanks are our sponsors, who we will name at a later date, and the association executive and tour ts a large effort was put forth to get the diamonds at the different venues in top shape and a 'big thanks is extended to Imagine driving with a 70 foot ladder strung across the back of your car!
