Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, August 9, 1995 -- 23 a Jr. Merchants stage big rally for 5-1 victory This week's' Port Junior Merchants sports report is sponsored by Precision Construction, Coldwell Bankers - Brett Puckrin, Ives Antiques, and Van and Truck World. This past week was an interesting one which will be remembered by all players for a few years to come. On Monday night, the Port Junior Merchants visited Richmond Hill men's team for; the first time this year and quickly fell behind 1-0 in the second inning. The game became a pitcher's duel with the infamous Richmond Hill pitcher striking out 14 players in a row going into the seventh inning. At the top of the last inning, the Port Juniors were determined not to let all the strikeouts affect them and each batter approached the plate with the integition of making contact. Their determination paid off as they put five runs across the plate, with singles by Rich Burkholder, Empringham, Laird, a double by Moase, a triple by Card, and a long sacrifice fly by Vander Slagt. The exciting comeback in this 5- 1 game was a real boost for the team, coaches and fans. Card pitched 7 innings, striking out nine, walking only one, allowing six hits and one earned run. On Tuesday, Port visited the excellent Aurora Complex and faced an old friend and team-mate - pitcher Denis Smith. Once the game started, it was all business as Port proceeded to put seven runs together. Card pitched seven innings with 12 strike outs, two walks, three hits, and no earned runs for the 7-0 win. Thursday's return match with Aurora had to be cancelled due to the@amount of water still on the diamond at game time. On the weekend, the Port Juniors were entered in the Meaford Tournament along with a few other teams from the Oshawa and City District Men's League: Port Antrim, Scarborough Royals, Bradford and Richmond Hill. the format was a double knockout and the Port Juniors quickly won the first two games. This meant that they had to be defeated twice in order to be denied a spot in the finals against the five other division winners. In the first game, Port met a team from Waterloo who started Bantam streak now at six wins The Port Perry Merchant Bantam Fastball team extended their league winning streak to six gamed with an exciting 6-5 win over Scarborough on Wednesday August 2. This writeup is brought to you by Wagg Roofing. / The Merchants have been playing some excellent ball lately and wanted to continue their winning ways as they head toward their OASA playdowns later this month. Scarborough drew first blood in this game as they opened the game up with two runs in the top of the first inning. It took the Merchants until the second inning to figure out the Scarborough pitcher and when they did they unloaded on him to the tune of five runs and took a 5-2 lead at the end of the second inning. Scarborough is a very good team and they just would not give up and kept on picking away at the Merchant lead with two runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the sixth to make it a 5-5 game going into the seventh and final inning. After Scarborough was held scoreless in their half of the seventh it was the Merchants turn at bat. Jason Best was leading off the inning and he showed why he is one of the steadiest players on the team as he once again came through with a clutch lead off single to get things going. Next up was Derek Tindall who was asked to sacrifice bunt to PORT PERRY TIRE & WHEEL Automotive ® Farm Commercial ® All Brands Check our Prices Before You Buy! Derek then showed his blazing speed as he stole second. Now with runfiers on second and third with nobody out Doug Short was intentionally walked to put a force on at every base. Now with none out up stepped pitcher Marshal McQuaid with a chance at knocking in the winning run and this he did with a hard shot down the first base line to give his team a 6-5 victory. Marshal not only knocked in the winning run but was also the winning pitcher as he went the distance striking out five along Jon Froats with wo walks each, Clay Brown ard Ryan Hawkins with a single each, and Marshal McQuaid lead the way with three singles and a triple. The Merchants will put their win streak on the line Wednesday August 9 against the big bad Peterborough Thunder with an 8:30 pm start time. The crucial hit was an RBA double by MacLennan which scored Smart who, pn an overthrow, stole home to take an important two run lead. Denis Smith, who relieved coming into the sixth was able to retire the side with his change-ups, and got credit for the win. In the second game, Port Juniors met a strong team from TARA (Owen Sound). Led by Smart's desire to beat one of his recent school mates, Port went ahead 1-0 in the first when McBride, on with a single, was moved over to third with a Ryan Burkholder single. He then scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Smart. A home run by Vander Slagt in the second gave Card the lead he needed, pitching seven innings, striking out six, walking one, and allowing six hits and no earned runs for the 2-0 win. TARA went on to beat Waterloo and were slated to play the Port Juniors who now had to be defeated twice to be kept out of the playoff round. Unfortunately, TARA put together 6-1 and 5-1 back to back wins to eliminate the Port Junior Merchants from the Tournament. The first loss was not pretty, but the second loss was a good effort by a TARA team with strong hitting and pitching. Port put 15 hits together in the two games, but were not timely enough to score the runs when needed. The Juniors stayed at the Tyrolean Village in the Blue Mountains, and with 28 people in one chalet, the weekend turned out to be a great time of ball and socializing. for many years to come, we will all remember the entertaining Blues Brothers team of Murray and Roger, and the light-footed country western dancing of Jeff Card.
