How else to explain Parizeau's behavior last week when he called a news conference to trot out a federal document which he claims is proof of a "plot" by Ottawa to marshal the "no" forces in the referendum. Parizeau, just back from a nice summer respite in the south of France (surprise, surprise) even went so far as to accuse the federal government of plotting to get all nine provincial premiers to go to work for the no side. Parizeau either got into some real nasty French wine on 'his summer vacation, is filled with utmost paranoia seeing shadows behind every lamp post, or knows only too well the referendum is doomed unless he can stir up some kind, any kind of an anti-Quebec issue to catch the attention of the voters in la belle province. The document Parizeau trotted out turned out to be a 12- page policy statement written by a federal civil servant last April outlining steps the federal government may want to follow in the period leading up to the referendum. It has not been approved or even seen yet by any senior politicians, including the Prime Minister. But so what. Does Parizeau actually believe the federalist politicians in Ottawa are going to sit idly by during this referendum? The federal Liberals, Tories and Reform, last time we checked, are in favour of keeping this country together.Likewise the nine premiers outside Quebec. Parizeau has absolutely no qualms about jumping into bed with his cousins from the Bloc Quebecois (drawing federal pay cheques, by the way as Members of the Canadian Parliament) yet he cries "conspiracy" when it appears Ottawa is getting ready to fight to keep the country together with the help of the other premiers. Parizeau is not a stupid man, far from it. He has letters speaks perfect French and even better English. Yet one has to wonder why he pushes on with this wild dream of Quebec independ , or quasi independ since he wants to continue to use the Loonie, the army and enjoy an economic alliance. The average Quebecois may indeed have a yearning deep in the heart for independence, but knows an independent Quebec in this day and age would fall flat on its face and 'would have all the international and economic clout of Botswanh. | The average Quebecois facing reality is much more interested in d things like g g or keeping a job, sending kids to college and having 'something left for a few years' retirement. Parizeau, bright guy that he is, just doesn't seem to catch the drift in his own province these days. Maybe if he vacationed in the Gaspe instead of on the Cote d'Azure, he might learn a thing or two. Federal conspiracy, indeed. The people who live in the rest of Canada and who still care about the future of this country, would be damned disappointed if Ottawa did not muster forces against the referendum. Parizeau may not want to admit it, but Canadians outside Quebec have more than just a passing interest in what happens there, especially the of the referendum By crying "plot and conspiracy," Parizeau is taking a page from the book of every nationalistic Quebec pofitician since the end of the last war. Only trouble is, times have changed. It won't work anymore. Parizeau's actions last week just confirmed it. after his name from some of the best schools anywhere, | INTO ONE BIG... GIANT... How did Jack Anonby get to be 76 years old and know so little' about the heritage and culture of his fellow Canadians? ie. "The Orange men and women". (Letter to the Editor July 25). For the record, here is the purpose statement of the Loyal Orange Association in Canada. The Orange Association is a patriotic, benevolent and Protestant society whose purpose is to: 1. Encourage its members to actively participate in the Protestant Church of their choice. 2. Actively support the Canadian system of government. 3. Anticipate legislation and its impact on civil and religious liberties of all Canadians. 4. Provide social activities which will enrich the lives of its members. 5. Participate in benevolent activities which will enrich our communities and our country. Please read a book or two, Jack, before you make misguided judgements of other people's motives. I recommend two by Robert O'Driscoll "and surprise, Jack, he is a member of the Roman «(Catholic faith". The Irish in Canada the Untold Story and The Sash Canada Wore. These books tell of the contribution the Orange have made in Canada. You make a big deal out of being a Protestant Christian Jack. Did you ever read in your bible "Judge not lest ye be judged?"One more book for you to add to your reading list. How about a look at the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms? Orange people have civil rights too. If you took the trouble to study some history you would know. The, freedoms we enjoy today really only began with King William the 3rd's victory over the Tyrant James the second who would haye imposed his will on Parliament and his religion on everyone. The Battle of the Boyne put a stop to that and made us all free. And this is the heritage we celebrate with our parade. We live in a multicultural society Jack, and whether you Jack. We in the Port Perry lodge have raised thousands of dollars to support the hospital, the arena, the Public Library, Scugog Shores Museum, Scouts and Guides, the Cancer Society, the Heart Fund, minor sports, to name a few. We also take part in Canoe the Nonquon, Festival Days and Port Perry Fair. Thank you for this opportunity to set yoy straight Jack. If you or anyone else would like more information on the Orange Association send us a self like it or not, we Or: are a proud part of the national mosaic. And we were even before Confederation. Did you know the first Prime Minister and a Father of Confederation was an Orangeman named Sir John A. MacDonald? Well, look it up lope and we will be happy to respond.
