wy 4 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 1, 1995 Brad a familiar face after decade in same location How do you know when the season for delicious home grown and fresh-picked vegetables has arriyed? " Well, for the past ten years, one of the first in the Scugog area to set up his road-side stand has been Brad Puckrin. He's become a familiar sight on the east side of busy Simcoe Street (formerly-Lilla St) in Port Perry and over the decade has built a solid reputation for top quality corn, tomatos and potatos sold from the back of his white Chevy half-ton. "I really like meeting the people, the customers," he told the Citizen over the weekend as a steady stream of people pulled in for a dozen ears or basket of brilliant red field tomatos. "I have had so much support from the local people over the years," he said, adding that business has shown a steady increase each year. Some of his customers don't even pull off busy Simcoe Street. They just stop their car and Brad passes the order through the window. "It's kind of like having a drive-thru," he said with a chuckle. Brad actually began selling veggies at the corner of Concession 10 and the Seagrave Road when he was 13 years old. There was another vendor at the Simcoe Street location. When he left, Brad asked the GO-FER IT! But selling to the public is just half the story. The corn is fresh-picked each day and that means getting out of bed at 4:00 AM to spend most of the morning in the 30 acres of corn at the family farm near Seagrave. Fresh picked the game day certainly is one of the reasons for his popularity. On weekends, Brad's wife Heather works with him at the stand. During the week she's an accountant with an Oshawa computer company. "This fall, we'll be putting out pumpkins and Indian corn leading up to Halloween," she said. Brad admits the early mornings and the long days in the hot sun can be tiring, but he says it's all worth it. When he's not on the farm or selling by the roadside, he works (October to May) as a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Port Perry. Selling veggies, he said, gave him pocket money in high school, helped him at college and now js paying the mortgage on the house. "Oh, sure, we make some money at this. I don't think I'd be putting in the long hours for nothing," he said with a smile. But when customers say "welcome back, nice to see. you again," that helps to really make it all worthwhile. .
