I hastily read M.W. Bradburn's letter and thought 'My God! A fully realised rebuttal!' I then had a good night's rest and a good breakfast, re-read the letter and realised that I was most mistaken." Does it sound like a dramatic tale? Well, not really. But then again what can be expected by a bumbling schoolboy such as - myself? Wild melodramatics? Terse insults? Maybe, but I'll promise to keep the gloves on as long as I can while I address a few points that Mr. Bradburn pursuits. Firstly, a word on the birth of the United States and Canada-- The U.S. was initially instigated not by angry masses but by angry wealthy landowners who didn't feel like playing taxes (gee whiz, aa TTA PAV Sa PAI son APN the more things change the more they stay the same). Canada was created in part out of fear of annexation by the United States. The wealthy landowners known as the Fathers of Confederation weren't as angry as their American cousins because they stood to make great piles of money through Confederation. History's funny that way--great things sometimes come about from stupid beginnings. But I digress. Secondly, Mr. Bradburn seems to have shot himself in the foot on the issue of morals. Even gun control can't stop every accident. After vehemently opposing any attempt to define family values he almost magically raises the spectre of Moral Law. When there is "democratic intrusion" into Moral Law, democracy "crosses its boundaries" into totalitarianism. When can there be any "intrusion" unless you ~.have boundaries for Moral Law? How can you have boundaries if you don't have a definition Mr. | THOMAS . I hava my own conception of family valugs that I have no problem sharing if asked, and the important words here are 'my own gonception'. on't see the need to inflict them on others so I don't..very much unlike the moral crusaders who seem to get a lot of media attention attacking things like the communist conspiracy, .homosexuals, Muslims, rock music and Disney as a threat to their family values. I say this with no repentance: if things like evil nasty movies you have never seen are indeed destroying your family, your family values need reassessment, not society's. I am not denying that there is a lot of stupidity out there, but people seem to forget that they still have choice. The true crime against society arises when choice is taken away, whether by the relentless victim politics of Political Correctness militants or by the "Moral Majority" warriors and self-styled populists. Mr. Bradburn, you certainly did plot out the plang of the family values-orientated activities--"Once we define, categorize and, stratify..we will then legislate it and litigate it." Are the days gone when people could choose to ignore things they don't necessarily like instead of lobbying to force their view down everyone's throats by assuming to be the mouthpiece for the 'silent majority"? Premier Mike Harris, echoing the sentiment of Ralph Klein in Alberta has said that anyone protesting the government of Ontario will be protesting against the people of Ontario Harris was referring to a motley group of social protesters when Klein was referring to the official Provincial opposition. In this statement he perfectly sums up what I believe Mr. Bradburn was saying in his letter: a minority deserves no legitimacy. Dissent from 'popular opinion' is inexcusable. Hmmm. Perhaps it is that myprofessors were a bunch of "corfinie pinkos" corrupting my young impressionable mind, but does this idea not strike anyone else as being not only the antithesis of democracy, but also a regression to simpler times of rule-by-fear. If so, will society mirror politics? Will this be the triumph of the "life, liberty and equality" of which you spoke Mr. Bradburn? Rationality, like family values, lies in what you make of it, not what you make others believe.
