Lightning streaks are reported in 25-50% of cases, but this is also a symptom associated with retinal tears, a potentially serious condition. In fact, retinal breaks occur in 15-30% of vitreous detachments caused by the vitreous tugging on the retina as it separates from it. A shower of small floaters or black dots is more characteristic of a retinal tear.
