Over the past weekend there were a couple of events held with 14 of the local youth attending.a junior development umpire's clinic in Courtice, and nearly 40 players attended a skills development clinic in Greenbank. Both items were well received by the participants with the skills clinic drawing some very positive comments from players, coaches, and parents. Skills Development Clinic, Port Perry - In addition to the * aforementioned clinic, there will - be one in Port Perry on the date of Saturday, May 6 at 9am. It will be held down at the lakefront diamonds and is available for all participants registered for the 2 mite categories and youth ages as well. It is a benefit for all the players The Port Pony Ringette Assocation celebrated a aon year at its annual year end banquet Sunday at the the Blackstock Rec Centre. The Novice, Petite, and Tween teams all won gold medals at the Reglonals, and the Junior Team won the Provincial Jr.'/A Champlonship. The association right now is in the middle of ordering shirts and hats and it makes it very difficult, for the executive when they don't know where they're at for total numbers. A final registration will be allowed at the skills development with a late fee charged as well. On The Field - As of last week all the rep teams have taken to the diamonds and are in the process of their evaluations, These will be done within the next week or so with the return to the house leagues of those who do not make one of these squads. As for the house leagues they will be taking to the fields starting the week of May 8th with the following schedule: 7-8 Mites - Monday, May 8th (6:30 at S.A. Cawker P.S); 9-10 Mites - Wednesday, May 10th (6:30 at Scugog Centre - Arena); Youth Boys - Tuesday, May 9th (6:30 at Scugog Centre - Arena); Youth Girls - Thursday, May 11th (6:0 at Scugog Centre - Arena); Youth Lob Ball - Monday, May 8th (7:00 at Scugog Centre - Arena); T-Ball - Tuesday, May 23rd (6:30 at RH Cornish P.S.) These will be the nights and times for the league games in each category. In addition to this there will be practice times allocated as well for each division. Belle River sweeps Eagles As expected, the Belle River Canadiens are the Ontario Junior C Hockey champions for 1994-95. Belle River wrapped things up on the weekend with a pair of victories over the Bowmanville Eagles to sweep the series in four straight games. After taking the first two games in Bowmanville by scores of 6-2 apd 4:3, Belle River defeated 'the Eagles 6-2 and 5-2 'In the friendly confines of their home arena. Belle River was clearly the class of the Junior C leagues this season running up a record of more than 50 wins against just one loss and one tie: In post season play the team went through five series with a perfect 20-0 record. This could be the last playoff in Junior C for the Bowmanville Eagles as the club has applied to the OHA for Junior B status in the coming season. CMB to hold umpire clinic The season is quickly approaching that many youths in the area have been patiently waiting for. Ball season! Cartwright Minor Ball is finalizing team and game details in preparation for the upcoming season. Mike Danilko, Head Umpire, is preparing a clinic for returning umpires as well as those wishing to learn to umpire. The clinic will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Town Hall in Blackstock. Paul Gillen from Oshawa will again be running the clinic. This presents an opportunity for some of the youth in the area to earn some extra cash this summer. No experience is necessary as CMB will train them. Applicants must be willing to work one evening per week from late May until late August (family holidays excepted). Those who have umpired in previous years are invited to attend as well as coaches as this will give them an opportunity to brush up on the rules of the game.
