TH With spring in the air this seems like an appropriate topic. Early this century, some interest was generated by changes in the eye, because in the absence of an accurate early test for pregnancy, it was thought that ocular changes could be used in * detecting and monitoring pregnancy. Pregnancy affects various organs in a woman's body, and the eye is no excaption. The hormonal changes which lead to swelling in the extremities can also cause swelling of the eyelids and cornea (the clear tissue at the front of the eye). This increases the curvature, the thickness of the cornea. As many as 75% of contact. lens wearers are women of child-bearing age. Therefore, these corneal and. eyelid changes can disrupt the contact lens fit and comfort. As well, tear quality and quantity are affected by p lly in the third trimester leading to less efficient lubrication, increased contact lens deposition, and reduced tolerance for contact lens wear, Even non-contact lens wearers may experience a dry eye problem. Pregnant contact lens wearers may have to temporarily refrain from lens wear until some time after giving birth. Mild to moderate shifts towards nearsightedness have been reported, but there is considerable individual variation. A reduced ability to.focus on reading material is associated with pregnancy. Though recovery is quick, it often remains for some weeks after birth. In less common eases serious pathological conditions may also devek op, and any pl ting ocular condition may be rbated by the ch of pi During this period, Dr. Workman recommends detailed eye examinations to assess the health of the internal and external eye, especially if contact lens wear is to be continued. Since fluctuations in prescription are not the norm, there is no. reason for a woman und 10 wait until after gic birth to haw oye examination. Patients are lled on appropriate d ure for dry eye and on other prav. conditions experienced during pregnancy. , evening hours will be fo and Thursday.
