- 24 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, April 25, 1995 = Belle River up 2 in Junior C finals Living up to their reputation as the number one ranked team in the province, the Belle River Canadiens have jumped into a 2. 0 lead in games over the Bowmanville Eagles in the best of seven Ontario Junior C Hockey final. Canadiens opened the series Saturday evening in Bowmanville and skated away to a fairly easy 6-2 victory. On Sunday afternoon, the teams were back in action in Bowmanville and Belle River clipped the Eagles 4-3 Eagles made the score closer than the game as they managed to find the range with just six seconds left in the third period. The Canadiens are described as a powerhBuse of a Junior C team. During the regular schedule they racked up 251 goals and surrendered just 81. In four playoff series they won 16 straight games and overall this season sport a record of 55 wins, one loss and one tie. Brad Kelly, sports editor at the Bowmanville Statesman described the team as "big, fast, tough, well coached and very smooth gg the power play." Eagle coach Mark Watson, in something of an understatement, sgid after Sunday's loss that his squad must win game three in Belle River to eh chance of making a series of it. Belle River won the coin toss in this series. Games three and four are in Belle River this Friday at 8:30 PM and Saturday at 2:30 PM. Game five is May 6 in Belle River at 2:30 and game six back in Bowmanviille on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 PM If the series goes seven, Belle River will host the game Sunday, May 14 at 2:30 PM Blackstock Figure Skating Club member Heather Malcolm, 17, passed her Junior Bronze Free Skate test last month. Heather Is the first skater from the BFSC to reach this honour. Coach by Elaine McAuliffe of Peterborough, Heather joined the club when she was 11 years old and for the past five years has been an amateur coach. Heather sald she is satisfied to achieve this personal goal. BFSC tries again for annual meeting The Blackstock Figure Skating Club will try a second time to get enough members out to the annual meeting. The first meeting, back on April 19, had td.be cancelled for lack of attendance. This has been re-scheduled for May 3 at 8:00 PM at the Blackstock Town Hall. The executive of the Blackstock Figure Skating Club have taken out an ad this week urging people to attend that May 3 meeting and stating that the Club could be in danger of folding. Jay Tredway, grade 12 student at Ridley was named the 1995 recipient of the Headmaster's Trophy, awarded to the student on the First Hockey Team who best dis, effort, ability and clean play. Jay was Assistant Captain of the Ridley team that lost in the finals of the St. Catharines city championship. Heather Tredwayasa grade 10 student and sister of Jay was awarded her "Colours" for her etfort on the Girls Hockey team. Colours are equivalent to collegiate letters * and recognize the highest degree of skill and commitment to their sport. Jay and Heather's parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Tredway of Greenbarik. Daniel Lee a grade 9 student, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Lee of Utica was also honoured with the Keith Mawhinney Trophy for the student on a hockey team, other than the First Team who best displays effort, ability and clean play. Dan was goaltender for the Under 16 Hockey Team and also received an academic scholarship for grade nine. The sports awards were made at the College earlier this month. Auto Wreckers repeat 'as Atom HL champions The Whitby Auto Wreckers capped a very successful season on Sat. April 2 by winning their Laurentian bank team. The contest was intensely fought by both squads with constant end to end rushes. Leading the charge for Whitby was John Ross Leanox with, 2 goals and a pair of assists. Single goals were scored by Chris McKitterick and Cameron MacDonald. Joel Campbell picked up an assist. Chris Glouster scored both unassisted goals for Laurentian. Picking up trephy awards for Good Sportsmanship for the Whitby team were Joseph Farquarson and Jeff Kane; and for Laurentian, Chris Glouster and Patrick Derrane, the Laurentian goalie, who held a very hot hand on this day with a stellar effort along with his counterpart at the Whitby end, Peter Konstantinopoulas. Congratulations to both squads for a well and cleanly played affair showing good sportsmanship by both sides who had a keen rivalry all season. It has been a very progressive sedson for the Whitby Auto Wreckers. After losing 2 of thelr first 4 gamés of the season, the team settled down to play some good hockey and have gone undefeated since Nov. 12, amassing an overall record of 16-2-1 in league play. The team players and staff would like to thank Mr. Labonovich of Whitby Auto Wreckers for his sponsorship and support this year as in past years. We would also like to thank our parents for their continued support both vocally / and financially which made second straight Atom House league title with a 4-2 victory over a very determined Cartwright PS Junior Girls wop the B Basketball championship recently. The team-lost In a nall-biter against Palmerston but went on to wih over E.A. Lovell, Sunset Heights and S.A. Cawker. The team will be playing the the Junior area playoffs in May.
