In most cases, their parents love and comfort them dearly. The adversity in their lives has enriched them as human beings. They are more patient, compassionate, loving and understanding, than many of us can ever hope to be. What are we saying to those parents and their children if we, condone what Mr. Latimer and Mrs. Wilkieson have done? Lest one think I am not sensitive to these tragedies, I have read many commentaries on this case - some have brought tears to my eyes. I have discussed it with many friends, families and co-workers. I have lain awake at night 9 ov! articulating how best to objectively understand this crisis, and how best to subjectively convey my horror. In a perfect world, Ryan and Tracy would still be with us. I cannot appreciate their parent's anguish, but I can understand it. I also know it is not a perfect world. It can be an immensely frustrating and lonely world. I sincerely hope Tracy, Ryan and Cathy are pain free and hagpy. Nevertheless, Mr. Latimer should not be subject to the full penalty of the law, but should serve a portion of this sentence. When all is said and done, Robert Latimer is alive and Tracy is not. In law, precedent is everything. In the Latimer case, the potential precedent will either be di or reassuring.
