=> Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 21, 1994 --7 + New development a priority for in-coming council The newly elected Scugog Township council will get down to birsiness at the inaugural meeting December 12 with economic development a long term priority over the next three years, -- Mayor Howard Hall said tourism and attracting small industry will continue to be important priorities. And he pledged to continue to try to attract a motel/hotel to the community, something he's been working on for the last six years. He said the Conway property on Highway 7A just east of Water Street would be an ideal location for a hotel/motel development. Ward 3 councillor Ken Gadsden who chaired the economic development committee, told the Citizen the committee will continue with the development of a "community profile" for Scugog that can be used as a marketing tool to attract new business and industry. He said there is reason for a certain amount of op that taxes. She noted that if 300 new homes can be built over the next three years, this would generate $1.2 million in local levies. Ward 1 councillor Doug Moffatt, starting his first term after knocking off incumbent Ken Carruthers, said the Township has all kinds of potential for new development. He suggested that the council should come up with a list of actual companies and pay a visit to each individually to show them the benefits of re- lovating in Scugog Councillor Moffatt said some of the other priorities will be to aim for a one percent reduction in the local budget and to make sure the new community facility at the Arena pays its way and does not need tax revenues to operate. Ward 5 rep Karen Puckrin told the Citizen with more cut-backs coming from senior levels of government, Scugog has no choice * but to seek new devel But there must be Scugog can attract light or high tech industry here. "We have the lake and (Scugog) is within easy driving distance to Toronto," he said, adding he feels Scugog is going to experience an economic recovery in the next few years. Stating that he wants to continue to work with the economic development committee, councillor Gadsden said he thinks the Township must move ahead with plans for recreation facilities (swimming pool and/or second ice pad) at Scugog Centre as a further means of enticing new business to the community. Ward 2 rep Marilyn Pearce said there are "a lot of positive (economic) indicators on the horizon," for the Township. The mood and the climate are much better than they were three years ago and this should be a big help in attracting small business and light industry. Like councillor Gadsden, she said it's important that Scugog continue to work on the plans for new recreation facilities. But she said 'funds must come from existing revenues, not higher a balance between this and maintaining the quality of life here. Councillor Puckrin said she is going to take her time "getting to know the ropes," and pledged to make every effort to keep communication open with the people in her ward. "I will not let myself get out of touch with the people just because | was elected," she said, adding she is convinced the Township and the Fair Board can reach agreement on a new lease for the Port Perry Fairgrounds. Ward 4 councillor Joyce Kelly, also starting her first term, said she has not set any particular priorities for the short term. But she found out during the election campdign, there are a couple of roads in her ward that need immediate attention. The former Board of Education trustee agreed economic development is an important priority for the Township, but added "Scugog is a great place to live, let's keep it that way." She said she will ease into the job gradually, taking time to learn as much as possible about the municipal process. Mayor Hall told the Citizen he will meet with all members of council before setting assigning members to committees. He also wants to hold an informal session early in the New Year to let councillors speak openly and frankly about what they want to see for Scugog over the next three years. Regional councillor Yvonne Christie was not available to comment for this article due to illness.
