Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, October 25, 1994 --29 4 Curling, sometimes known as the roaring game, will soon be underway at the Port Perry Curling Club for another season. Last Sunday the club held an open house and a social curling to welcome new members and let curlers shake out some aches and pains after a long summer away from the rink. Curlers getting set to throw and sweep the rocks The curlers are back for another season at Port Perry Curling Club. Sometimes called the- oeatitg game," curling is a sport enjoyed by all ages and it be as competitive as the individual wants to make it. Schedules at the Port Perry Club get underway this coming Monday (Oct. 31) with the mens leagues on the ice Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, president John Bredin told the Citizen. The business ladies will play their games on Tuesday evenings, while Monday and Tuesday afternoons will see the ladies on the ice. Friday evenings it is the very popular mixed league with 16 teams and the club is looking for more players to add more teams as there are now people on a waiting list. Membership convenor Don Beaton says there are still openings for ¢urlers and new members are more than welcome. If they have never curled before, club members will be more than happy to give them all the instruction they need in the basics of this fine winter sport. As well as the regular league play for men, women and couples, the Port Perry Club will be the scene for numerous bonspiels throughout the winter. A list of the bonspiels has been posted ai the Club for skips wishing to enter a rink. The sport of curling has a rich history in Port Perry, going back many years. The club is located at the corner of Bay St. and Old Simcoe Road. Malmont Atoms lose close one to Markham On Oct. 21 our Atom 'A' Rep team hosted Markham "Thunder". The game was closely contested with the visitors stealing a 4-3 victory.In the opening period Tyler Weisflock was 'rejected' on a backhand shot after swooping in on right wing. Goalie D'arcy Stephens stopped a partial breakaway several minutes before Markham opened a 1-0 lead. Adam Moynes made a nice pass to Dean VanCamp in front and Scott Duncan had a hard shot from the blueline for our other period hi-lites. Dean VanCamp bulled his way around the defense and scored our tying goal on a deke to the backhand to get the "Green Machine" fueled up for the second period. Assists were by Steve MacLennan and Trevor Lance. Shortly after, Trevor Lance hit the post on a good chance and D'arcy smothered the puck well to foil a 2-on-1 Markham opportunity. At 4:35 Tim Jones pumped a goal from the top of the face-off circle after a rebound came out from a play by Trevor Lance and Mark Duncan. This gave Port a 3-1 lead as Dean VanCamp had made it 2-1 earlier on a quick wrist shot under the crossbar with assists by Mark Duncan and Trevor Weisflock Other second' period plays of note included D'arcy's amazing stick save (from on his belly) to stop a Thunder player who was left all alone in front. Tyler Houthuys and Jamie Smith on defense did some good work at the offensive blueline to stop clearouts. Near the end of the second Adam Moynes used his size!! to shield the puck in getting by a defender and earning a good short-handed scoring chance. In the third period Markham notched a power play goal and then tied the score by taking advantage of hiding a man all alone in front of the net. Encouraged by their success they thundered on to score the winner. Goalie Mike Koury stopped further damage with a nice blocker save. Near the end of the game, Jeff Tarbotton came close to notching the tying goal as he, Dane Gray, Mike LeFort and Justin Moffatt were all buzzing around the offensive zone and battling for the puck. Out comeback was interrupted by the curfew buzzer unfortunately, but it was a good game for the Malmont squad nonetheless. On Oct. 23 our Malmont squad travelled to Oshawa to take on the Oshawa Redwings. Our boys played a very well executed game with solid defensive plays and great hustle by our forward lines and good goaltending. As a result, we rolled over the Redwings by a 8-0 score. Dean VanCamp had a great game, scoring 5 of our 8 goals, and was given the nod for "Best Effort". Port's first goal was scored by Dean just minutes into the first period. Dean picked up a loose puck in front of his own net and skated all the way up ice sweeping in front of the Oshawa goalie and scoring on a back- hand. Two minutes later, Dean again put Port up 2-0 on a hard wrist shot beating the goalie on the glove side" Assists went to Mike LeFort and Mark Duncan. Port went up 3-0 on a replay of our second goal when Dean again beat the goalie with a "wristshot. Assists on this goal were by Mike LeFort and Steve MacLennan. Our fourth goal was another instant replay of the second and third when right from the face- off Trevor Weisflock skated in and blasted a hard wrist shot over the goalies shoulder. Malmont forwards continued to contain Oshawa in thir own end with good forechecking and our blueliners worked hard at keeping the puck out of our end. However, Oshawa did manage to regroup somewhat in the second and goalie Mike Koury came up with some good saves. Dean VanCamp again scored his fourth of the game, when he received a pass from Mark Duncan and broke in all alone on the goalie to put Port up 5-0. Just meiffutes later Dane Gray received a pass from Jeff Tarbotton and Scott Duncan and managed to shovel the puck into the net despite being tripped by the defenseman. Port would go up 7-0 before the second period ended on Dean's fifth goal of the game, Mike LeFort and Steve MacLennan got assists. The third period saw a little more offense from Oshawa, however, our Malmont boys were able to keep them off the board to preserve the shutout. Jamie Smith closed out the scoring on an unassisted goal to give Port Perry the 8-0 win. Turn off the T.V. and come out to cheer on the Malmont lads when they host Peterborough on Oct. 28 at 8:00 pm.
