But it's an uneasy, troubled calm as people try to come to grips with the events of last Thursday evening when two armed gunmen left three Durham Police officers, a bank manager and a real estate agent wounded after a robbery at the Bank of Montreal in the Port Perry Plaza. Four of the five were still in hospital on Monday for treatment of their wounds which are not life threatening. Still others called it a "wake up" call that Port Perry and other small communitiee are no longer immune from this kind of vicious crime that until now seemed to happen elsewhere. "There is a sense of loss in the community, a stark reminder of the realities of life. But still, this community has got so much positive going for it," said Durham Police Sgt. Ken Hudson. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall called the shootings "devastating for the entire community." He went on to say this is not any kind of a trend and the reputation of the community shouldn't suffer any long term damage. "But it's only natural for people to be a little more cautious in their personal lives." He expressed wishes that all five of the wounded will make a complete recovery. The incident began about 7:15 Thursday evening when two masked men, one armed with a handgun the other with a rifle, walked into the Bank of Montreal branch at the Port Perry Plaza on Highway 7A. According to a customer in the bank at the time, one shouted "don't move, this is a stick-up." The customer, who asked that her name not be made public, told the Citizen the two men first rifled the cash tills, then told manager Al Knight to open the vault.
