See story at right for detalls. Bantam A's off to a good start for another season The Bantam A's are off to a great start this year with a few exhibition games under their garters. With a talented lineup, why shouldn't they be? The two puck stops who will be standing tall against the rubber this year will be Kent Johnston, a veteran and Shane Savage a new edition to the team, who had a great seasdn with the All- Ontario Champion Pee-Wee Legionaires, last year. Including Johnston, there'll be 6 returnees to the team including Rob Murphy and Colin Laird on the blueline. Scott Heffern, Mike Morden, and Adam Smith are back to the team looking as confident as ever. Mike Heasman, who played on the All-Ontario Finalist Bantam B's last season, Nick Skerratt who has shown all that he's a great defenseman, being called up from the farm team this year, and Casey Van Schagen, another member of the All-Ontario Champion Pee-Wees make up a strong defense core. A wise man once said "Defense is the key to a good hockey team". If this is true, watchout for these guys on the line. J8hn Froats, Derek Tindall, and Adam Hobbs, all students of Garry Geer's "The Road to the All- Ontario Cup", have signed multi- year contracts with the Country Style Bantam A's. Jay Strickert, who's season last year was extremely rough is back once again. Suffering from multiple game-related injuries one year ago, including a broken collarbone, broken jaw and a severe bitten lip, Jay has bounced right back this season not even missing a beat. Sean Hnatko, a good skater from Brooklin, and new to the Scugog area is looking good up front. Shane Norton, who was up for the playoffs last season has made his position full time this year. Shane has a lot of views on hockey and is well spoken. He said in the dressing room: "I'm against the helmet rule. It's just not for me" We've played four exhibition games with a record of 3 and 1. Fans, we'll tell ya about 2 of 'em Our home opener was against the Oshawa Black Hawks who had a previous pre-season record Cartwright Minor Ball annual meeting Oct. 18 The annual meeting for Cartwright Minor Ball will be held on October 18, 7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Centre in Blackstock. This was a good rough game with lots of hits and alot of action. Goal scorers were Norton, Heasman, 8mith (2) and Hobbs-where did he learn to shoot like that? Oh. Did | say Heasman? Beauty Mike! The' final score was 5 to 1, us. Our next home game was on October 3rd against Uxbridge We came out strong scoring the first 3 goals before the Bruins scored their only goals A slight tiff occurred after N took a vicious elbow, from Uxbridge player Shawn Brown, that dislodged his helmet and almost his head. Murphy was ejected for fighting, Norton for Third man in/playing without a helmet, and Laird got 56 minutes for 'dancing Uxbridge Bruins defenseman Jason Gregor was asked to leave early for chewing on Murphy's fists, and Uxbridge assistant captain, David Murr.s, got throwliout for being Laird's waltzing partner. The final score in this one was Port Perry 8, Uxbridge 1. Goal scorers in this one were Morden (2), Smith, Strickert, Froats, Heffern, Hpuatko, and VanSchagen. This week's p! profile is on second year vet®An forward, Scott Heffern. Heffy's been wearing #20 on his back so far this year. He's a tough two way Plager. with two goals and two assists in the last two games. With only 2 penalty minutes so far, Scott usually alot of icetime. Scott wants to come out to our games because "Hockey's a Canadian thing. You really should support your local teams (Country Style Bantams) and it's alot of fun. Alot of fun." Come on out to the arena and support the Country Styl Bantams. Folks, it's really Rocky, and the guys on the team would love it if we had a capacity crowd. Come on out! The Port Perry MoJacks have bolted from the starting gates in the new Central Ontario Junior C season and are tied for first place with the Bowmanville Eagles MoJacks are sporting a perfect record of three wins and no losses as they took a pair of Thanksgiving Weekend victories over the Lakefield Chiefs and Uxbridge Bruins. And with just seven goals against in those three gr:nes, the MoJacks own the best defensive record in the Central League to date At the Scugog Arena Sunday night, MoJacks built wha? looked like a comfortable 4-1 lead early in the third period, but then had to hang on as the Uxbridge Bruins mounted a late rally that made the final score 4- w The Bruin Shearly sent the match into OT as a shot rattled off the post in the final minute and MoJack netminder Rick Hutchinson saved a goal when he stabbed a low shot with the trapper that was headed for the corner of the cage. Bruins took a 1-0 firat period when Paul Charboneau stored at 18:02 on the power play with a shot from the slot. . The middle frame belonged exclusively to the MoJacks, however as they out-shot the visitors 17-4 on their way to a 3- 1 lead. Defenseman Steve Staniland clicked on the po play at 9:18 as he found the range from about 25 feet with a low shot to the stick side. Keith Leslie and Todd Dennis drew the assists. Three minutes later, Leslie was set up by Dennis and he scored on a high shot from close to the # Bruin cage. Leslie earned his third point of the game at 14:10 as he set up Jason Cochrane on another power Play & and the veteran made no Early "Re third, MoJacks did a bit of fancy passing around the Uxbridge net and the score was suddenly 4-1. Duane Empringham fed Jeff Parry at the side of the net; he slid the disc across to Steve Laird who had no trouble driving the puck into a nearly open cage. But the Bruins made it 4-2 at the 10:47 mark on a marker by Dan Holug and cut the margin to 4-3 with three minutes to play as John Liriano found the corner from 26 feet on a power play. Bruins, who had lost 6-5 Friday night to Bobcaygeon, applied a lot of pressure in the MoJack zone in an effort to get the equalizer. : On Friday night in Lakefield, the MoJacks got a pair of goals from Todd Dennis and another great game in nets from Hutchinson as they tolled to a 6- 4 win over the Chiefs Ryan Ridgway, Mike Pigeau, lan Titterton and Keith Leslie rounded out the scoring as the MoJacks broke a 4-4 deadlock in the third period with two un- answered goals. Hutchinson had to be sharp in this one asthe faced 36 shots, while the MoJacks fired 26 at Brent Halliday in the Lakefield net. This was a chippy game with several scraps that resulted in the expulsion of several players including captain Gavin Cochrane and rookies Ryan Ridgway and Chad Kearns. SLAPSHOTS: Head coach Brad Menzies was pleased with the weekend victories. "If we keep working hard, we're going to keep winning games," he said But he was bit concerned that the team has experienced third period let-downs "We have to bury them in the third period when we have lead." Avoiding these late game let- downs is not something the team can work on in practise other than to continue to stress conditioning. But overall he's happy with the k ethic shown by the players toWhte. MolJacks were short-staffed for Sunday's game with the Bruins as five players were out of the line-up due to suspensions and family commitments for Thanksgiving. * MoJacks have two games coming up this weekend as they are in Little Britain Saturday night at 7:30 PM, and back home at the Scug rena Sunday night to face Lakefield Chiefs at 7:00 PM. The final week in October will be a tester as they have four straight games on the road before winding up the month October 30 at the Scugog Arena against ths Eagles.
