muy Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, September 7, 1994 -- 7 - Barry Johnston jumps into Ward one race Barry Johnston believes Scugog Township should push ahead now with plans fora new recreation complex at the Scugog Arena. He said the complex should include a swimming pool, second pad of ice and indoor fitness facilities. "Absolutely. Thisis needed now for the community," he told the Citizen last week as he declared what he will be a candidate for the Ward one seat on Township council in the November elections. He said that paying for such a complex could be handled like the recent expansion to the Hospital: hire a fund-raising co- ordinator to generate funds, go after grants from upper level government, and if possible use volunteer labour to reduce the costs Mr. Johnston, a 15 year resident of the Township who operates his own bike repair business on Highway 7A, said he is also "very much in favour" of the proposed community hall at the Arena It is "needed, required and should be there," he stated. He said if elected, he wants to see Scugog adopt a more positive attitude to attracting new housing and industry "Council should be supporting these projects if they are good "projects," he said As for the contentious issue of a 'Doreen Kendall seeks Durham Board of Ed seat Long time Scugog resident and community volunteer Doreen Kendall will run for the Township seat on the Durham Board of Education "I love this community and I'm very concerned about the children," she told the Citizen Doreen Kendall If you see STEVE PARKER on September 7th, 1994 can you wish him a Happy 40th Birthday! BIG MAC last week Describing herself as tight fisted and fiscally responsible, Mrs. Kendall said the taxpayers deserve the best education that money can buy And that can be achieved by the fundamentals of education and cutting some of the frills "Common sense has to go a more stress on long way in the schools. There are still too many frnlls such as field trips," she stated Mrs. Kendall is a person of strong convictions not afraid to speak her mind. She said the school busing system should be made more efficient to avoid over-lapping of routes and to make sure buses carry a ful load of students She said if elected, she wil strive for open dialogue with tuents m approachable and up front. Mrs Kendall was my mother-in law," she said with a big smile n her face Married with two grown children who both attended schools in Scugog, the 56-year old Mrs. Kendall has been resident of the Township for the last 32 years She is Charter president of the local Kinette €lub, has worked many years as a the Museum, was involved in local Scouts for 27 currently and chairman of the Board of the Central Seven Association for volunteer at Scugog years and.is president Community Living This is her first attempt at elected office. Married with five sons, Mr Johnston worked 25 years in loan management with banks and credit unions. He bought a sports business in Port Perry seven years ago. This is his first run for elected office He said he would like to see Scugog appoint an independent committee to review complaints about violations of the Township's by-laws. If the committee cannot resolve the problem in a reasonable period of time, the case should proceed to court "More compassion is needed when it comes to the by-laws," he said, adding if elected he will get involved with any by-law problems Mr. Johnston stressed that the by-law issue is nat his only reason for seeking office, but he agreed that his own personal problems left him angry.
