wy 14 -- Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, September 7, 1994 Concert performer makes Port Perry home Eric Genuis played AIDS benefit in Poland this summer For Eric Genuis, serious hobby." And it seems to be getting a little more serious all the time for this 27-year old ex- Torontonian who now makes his home in Port Perry. Sales of his first tape "Last in Line" with 11 of his original songs are moving, briskly, and his musical career hit a high note this summer when he was invited to perform at a benefit "music is my concert near Cracow, Poland in front of an audience of more than 10,000 people, most of them young adults. "It was a real honour for me to be part of that Festival," he told the Citizen last week in an interview at his new Port Perry home. The concert was in support of AIDS victims in Poland who don't have the medical and social systems available in Canada. Port Perry Seniors enjoy day of golf The Port Perry Senior's meeting on August 26th was a fun and games day for all. Country Acres Driving Range and Miniature Golf invited the Seniors to use their facilities for a round of golf and use of the driving range. Some good scores were posted possibly due to short memories or creative counting but everyone had a good time. Our thanks to Esther Trotter and Adrienne for their hospitality. The members not golfing remained at the hall and played euchre. Following the competitions, a short meeting was held with the various committees (, g ' ' RAIA PF AN GAAS 7 7 TARR ET reporting on the activities planned. Genuis got the invitation to play at this concert when one of the organizers heard him perform at a concert for the Polish community in Toronto. After playing the benefit concert in Poland, Genuis and his wife Leslie toured several countries in Europe including his native Malta where he did "radio and TV interviews to promdte his music. His parents were born in Malta. He also gave two concerts in France in front of large audiences. He describes his music as soft and lyrical with each song having some kind of story woven through it. The title song "from the tape "Last in Line," for example deals with what he calls the "me-generation." "If you really want to be first, you should be last in line, helping your brother and fellow man," he said. Genuis has a degree in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music and a degree in math from the University of Toronto. He teaches math at a high school in Pickering. He and his wife Leslie (they were married early this summer) began looking for a place to live away from the big city and were absolutely thrilled to find a house to their liking in Port Perry. Not only does the quiet neighbourhood lend itself to Eric Genuis, song writer, performer - ] Genuis' song writing and composing, "the people are great, first class." When he had his first tape "Last In Line" produced last year, he had no plans to market it on a wide scale. But sales are well over 1,000 in Canada and Europe, he is now thinking of releasing a second one early next ear. Though he and his wife are just barely settling into their new home, Genuis says they already feel a part of the community. He was amazed when shopping for an item for the house, the clerk Blood Donor Clinic told him to take it home, see if he likes it and bring it back if he doesn't. That just never happens in the big city: He badly wants to make a musical contribution to his new community by getting involved with local productions or even performing live concerts. Asked if he would someday like to give up teaching to make his living from music, he smiled and left the question mostly un- answered. "I'm very content to continue teaching, but who knows. wri EMMER INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY "VAN CAMP & KELLER Chartered Accountants 204 CASIMIR ST., PORT PERRY 985-9725 © Marlin Travel (A division of the Thomas Cook Travel Group) 246 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-2268 Reg.
