- 10-- Scugog Clfiaen ~ Tuesday, August 16, 1994 an Volunteers needed to tackle Loosestrife The Environmental Youth Corps of Beugog is looking for volunteers to continue clearing the Highway TA causeway of Purple Loosestrife. Andy Ross and Jodi Hunter of the Environmental Youth Carps say the second clean up of Loosestrife along the Causeway at Port Perry will start this Thursday evening at 6:30 PM and continue through til darkfall Just wear workclothes, rubber boots if you have them, and bring a pair of clippers for snipping the bright purple flowers of the Loosestrife. Last week, Andy" Jodi and about a dozen volunteers were able to collect about 30 large bags of Loosestripe flowers from the south side of the causeway. This coming Thursday, they will concentrate their efforts on the north side. Purple Loosestrife has in recent years become a major menace to wetlands and marshes al over Ontario. Because the plant his no enemies and spreads very rapidly it quickly "take over" a marsh area, crowding out and eventually killing other forms of plant life. Bull rushes are especially endangered as Loosestrife deprives them of water Jodi pointed out that one plant can produce as many 2.7 million other plants once the tiny seeds start to spread. And that's what she and Andy and the volunteers are trying to do along the 7A causeway: prevent the spread of the plant which already is appearing in fairly significant numbers. If the plants are young, they will yank them out by the roots, but with the more mature plants, they are snipping the flowers which turn to seed. Andy said that in some parts of Ontario a beetle of European origin is being introduced to areas infested with Loosestrife in the hopes it will eat and destroy some plants. But the beetles are only being tested this year to see if they can make an impact. Controlling the spread of Loosestrife along the Causeway (the eastern gateway into Port Perry) is taking a lot of hard, physical work. If you'd like to help with this work, just show up at 6:30 PM, this coming Thursday evening, August 18. DOES YOUR TOILET ACT LIKE NIAGARA FALLS?
