SRE Tuesday, July 5, 1 home cookin' lynda kendry Before the: Drive-Thru In the older days - Before the Drive-Thru, almost any "woman"#® magazine that you flip through during the summer issues would probably feature a picnic. Don't they look wonderful? The matching crystal and fancy linens, to say nothing of the succulent food -- it always looks like the top chef just arranged it. Never looks quite like my devilled eggs that almost always slide to the down side of that big margarine container that's now in its second phase. Most of those featured picnics look like they belong to the Victorian era. It would probably take a day to prepare - not the mere minutes that most of us have when the urge to have a picnic strikes. My favourite picnic is still the old fashioned sandwich and cookies type. When we were sorting through Grandma's house last year we found an old Five Roses Flour cookbook printed in 1916. Some of the sandwich fillings were just a little wild sounding to me - fig paste, carrot spread - I don't think so! My favourite picnic sandwich is sliced chicken - and needs to be planned - at least long enough in advance to buy the barbecuéd chicken. My next favourite sandwich is tuna and walnut, llent a pd : healthstyles : deb mcdonald BETTER LATE THAN NEVER in a pita pocket. Here's my version . TUNA & WALNUT To 1 can drained tuna add handful of chopped walnuts (pecans would work too). Toss with dressing made with | tbsp (more or less) honey and whatever amount mayonnaise you like; salt & pepper to taste. This filling is best on whole wheat or grain bread with alfalfa sprouts. I have to admit that I never have to worry about sharing these sandwiches with my family! An old family favourite from my childhood is ®f course - ground hog meat! It's not really what it would seem. Using ground bologna (or ham) add some green relish, mayonnaise to taste and you've got an easy, tasty sandwich spread. I've made a similar type of cheese spread by using shredded cheddar in place of the meat; just use your i ination. It really doesn't matter though - sandwiches on a picnic are usually enjoyed no matter how squashed or mangled they get. Enjoy! Most people I'm sure will agree that you can't get enough of a good thing and at present, that's fresh strawberries. Choose berries that are brightly coloured and firm. When purchasing them from the market, avoid boxes that are stained and berries that are showing signs of mold. Peek through the holes at the bottom of the box to be sure unripe _ strawberries are not buried h Blaze levels home Damage has beeg #ét at about $135,000 after fire Hestroyed a frame house on Fralick's Beach Road Sunday afternoon. There were no injuries as the owners of the house were visiting friends when the fire broke out. Scugog Fire Chief Don Steele said the fire started in a 1985 Oldsmobile parked in an attached garage and quickly spread to the house. He. said what caused the fire is not known and probably will never be known because the car was completely destroyed. A neighbour turned in the alarm to the Scugog department shortly | before 3:00 PM. ANGLICAN I JOHN'S CHURCH The Rev'd Charles E. Bull Incumbent . Church Street, Blackstock Sunday, July 10 9:30 AM. Strawberries do not ripen after picking, as do some other fruits. High in Vitamin C as soon as berries are cut this vitamin depletes rapidly. They provide a good source of Potassium and contain a fair source of Iron. There are only about 55 calories in one cup of whole berries and a pint yields about 2 cups pf sliced berries.
