wr 18 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, May 3, 1994 We ought to treat every day as Earth Day Green ideas by Janet Banting Earth Day '94 was observed on Friday, April 22nd, apd plenty of things took JR to celebrate this very special annual eecasion. . Schools observed the day (and week) in a variety of ways. Students at Lakeside Public School in Ajax took home copies of the Union of Concerned Scientists' "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity" pamphlet (and if anyone locally would like some of these, please just give me a call). At Cartwright Central Public School the primary grades performed the play "Oh My Deer" and two invited guest speakers discussed environ-mental issues with different classes. At Greenbank Public School the brand-new environmental club held a bake sale to raise money for rainforest protection. Students at Port Perry High yd School made arrangements to see the play "Ruckus in the Rainforest" and are also making plans to do a clean-up during Pitch-In Week which members of the community are invited to take part in (call Together Respecting the Earth and the Environment member Sara Brown at 985- 9568 for details on TREE's plans). Undoubtedly, other schools not mentioned here also took part in special activities for Earth Day, so be sure to ask your own kids how they celebrated! Why not make a pledge to start taking advantage of the tremendous amount of environmental material asking that resident stopping the use of chemical sprays to control weeds and pests. These volunteers hope this personal approach will help bring home the message that the use of cosmetic pesticides is something we can all choose "to avoid. Along with the "Dear Neighbour" letter, pamphlets with more detailed information on pesticide use, its risks, and the alternatives, are being provided. Call 985- 32256 if you'd like more information about this project Global Action Plan in Uxbridge launched its second "module"-on water conservation-for Earth Day Uxbridge and area residents will be following the program in the Uxbridge Times Journal, and people from Port Perry are also welcome to take part. Cost of the program 1s only $6.00 For more information, contact June Paton at 852 4786. In Port Perry an "Eco Team" has been formed to work through the water module, and readers are welcome to call 985-3225 or 985-375? for more details For individuals who haven't yet taken much action in the environmental arena, here are ilable at the library? This includes books, magazines, special reference material, and oodles of informative videos. Knowledge is power! We all need to understand how our attitudes about things like money, material possessions, the hectic pace of life most of us lead, and our ideas about community, contribute to the difficulties we now find ourselves in. Once we better understand how we wound up in the environment crisis, we can begin figuring the ways that will lead us out of it. Consider joining a group in which you can meet new people, learn about the environment, and start to make a real dent in the many problems now facing us Locally, there are the Green Umbrella group and the Uxbridge Conservation Assoc iation, while regionally, ~ Durham Environmental Network is always looking for new members I have information on all three and will be more than happy to pass it along. Wouldn't it be neat if we all stated treating every day as Earth Day? After all, Planet Earth is the only home we've got! Kub Kar Rally!
