Port Juveniles ot tree rivals The Port Perry Key-Bar Juveniles knocked off arch-rival Uxbridge last Thursday night.to advance to the next round of the Ontario hockey finals against Trenton. In front of a home town crowd at the Scugog Arena, the Key- Bar gang never trailed as they handed Uxbridge a 4-3 defeat and ended the season for the guys in green. Sean Ellis from Brad ur gave Port a 1-0 lead after the first period and they added two more in the second from Scott Heasman and Darrell VanderLigt. Uxbridge captain Shane Pegg replied to make the score 3-1 heading into the dressing room after two stanzas. Lindsay Parry scored what proved to be the winner for Port Perry in the third on a set up by Chad Garvock and Ellis. For Uxbridge in the third, Pegg got his second of the match and Perry chipped in with a singleton. Matt Willetts was between the pipes in this one for Pert Perry and came up with the big saves when his team needed them the most. The teams stuck pretty much to hockey in this one with just minor penalties. After a tough; hard fought series the most players shook hands at centre ice when it was over. The Port Perry team put itself ina position to win the series on home ice and avoid another road game, thanks to'a 6-2 win in Uxbridge Feb. 14. Port Perry took full advantage of Uxbridge penalties to cruise to victory inthis one as Ryan Ridgway got them started in the first with help from Scott Wylie and VanderLigt. Three big goals ip the second period opened a 4-1 lead for the red and white. First it was Sean McEnaney, followed by Steve Desautels and captain Jeff Card. Darren Johnston managed a reply for Uxbridge, but Port Perry really had the game pretty much under control. Uxbridge fought back early in Juveniles up one against Trenton The Port Perry Key-Bar Juveniles have taken a 1-0 lead in games after defeating Trenton 9-7 in a wild overtime shoot-out 'Sunday night in Trenton. Sean Ellis and Sean McEnaney did the damage in overtime with Brad McArthur helping to set up both goals. Port Perry owned a 3-2 lead after the first on goals by Brett Puckrin, McEnaney and Scott Heasman. It was 6-5 after two period with the Port Perry markers coming from Heasman, Ellis and McArthur. McArthur also had.one in "the third, but Trenton tied the game and forced the overtime period. Along with his two goals, McArthur had three assists in this one. For the home town Trenton squad, Kyle Clark had two with two assists. Port Perry earned the right to play Trenton after dispatching the Uxbridge Juveniles on home ice last Thursday night. (see separate article) Game two in the Trenton series was played Feb. 21 in Port Perry and game three is this coming Monday (Feb. 28)-at. the Scugog Arena with faceoff at. 9:15. Gilime four is set for March 6 in Trenton at 7:45 and if a fifth game is needed, it will be in Port Perry March 7 at 9:15 PM. Big V prevails in Pee Wee HL action With Big V having three players serving suspension, it was thought that Larocque would have an easy time with this Pee Wee House League game. Not so. Big V Fundy like it was a final playol With two pds nt the first period, it looked as if Big V was going to walk all over Larocque. The first goal came from Sean Fletcher assisted by Erik Troan. The second goal was a result of a great passing play from Wade Ritchie to Sean Fletcher which caught Larocque's defense sleeping. Down 2-0, Larocque's woke up to reply with one goal late in the first period. Devon Symes sitting in front of the goal put a Ryan Fraser. The assist went to Brad Monsma. With Adam Brain away, Larocque's needed to beef up the defense. Joel Phoenix did a fine job filling in not only the third with a goal by Danny James but VanderLigt gave Port Perry a three-goal bulge once again as he was set up by Greg Fitzgerald and Brett Puckrin. And just to make sure it was "in the bag," Desautels fired home an empfy netter with an assist to McEnaney with 20 = seconds left on the clock. Final was 6-2 for the red and white. Techstar Bantams lead Newmarket in series On February. 18, the Port Perry Techstar Bantanis-hosted their first' game of playoff series against Newmarket. It was evident from the drop of the puck that both teams were ready to play hockey.-Fhis was the type of "edge of your seat" _-gamme that the fans were looking for. The visitors played a fast 'Wheeling game as Port's strong forechecking caught Newmarket off guard. Port took the lead early in the first with Matt Philips skating _ around the Newmarket players to make a nice pass to Shane Norton. It didn't take Newmarket long to respond. With 1:04 remaining in the first period, Gavin Baxter and Todd Parry set one up for Ryan Puckrin to take the lead. Early in the second Newmarket scored two goals to move them ahead. But that didn't last long as Matt Philips took advantage of the Newmarket goalie looking the other way. Port ined their lead in the ly but offe ly as well recording an assist. Again Devon Symes deflected a hard low shot from Joel. With both teams playing very even it was known that the next goal was going to be the game winner. Keith Hancock playing centre of the first time notched the winner from Peter McKitterick. This new line of Keith, Peter and David Crouter played like a seasoned machine! Both team's coaches were very pleased with the efforts of all rebound over the shoulder of team third when Todd Parry and Matt Philips fed the pass to Shane Norton. The play see-sawed back and forth as Newmarket scored again, Just when everyone was thinking overtime with 45 seconds remaining on the clock, Shane Norton came up with a great pass from Matt Philips to take the, game 5-4. Congratulations to Shane Norton on his 50th goal of the season. On Saturday, February 19, the Stars travelled to Newmarket to claim a 7-8 victory. Ashley VanSchelven netted the first goal of the game as he picked up the puck along the boards being dumped into the Newmarket zone by Robert Gracie. Newmarket was quick to. respond, but then again, so was Port when Ryan Puckrin one off the goal post. Trevor Smith assisted. Newmarket scored only minutes later to reduce the Port Perry lead. The first period scoring ended with Todd Parry making one of his great passes from behind the net to catch Shane/Norton waiting in the slot. The second period was hard, fast hockey by both teams, but Port was able to hold Newmarket. 'The only goal scored in the second was by Matt Baxter on a rebound'from a Trevor Smith slapshot off the point. The Stars were on a roll and not about to back down as they potted three more in the third. Ashley VanSchelven netted two in the third for a hat trick. Matt Philips drilled one between the goalie's pads. Assists went to Gavin Baxter and Shane Norton. All the boys gave 110% in this game and netminder Jamie Trick had an outstanding game. Playoff dates at Scugog Arena Scugog Arena will be the scene for several exciting minor hockey playoff games over the next week or so. Here's the line-up. There are three games on tap this Friday evening (Feb. 26) starting at 7:00 PM when the Novice Auctioneers take on Lindsay. ' At 8:00 PM the Atom 1 team will host Collingwood, and at 9:30 PM, the Bantam 2s take on Newmarket. On Saturday, Feb. 26, the Pee Wee 2s host Newmarket at 5:00 PM, followed by the Midget 3s and Manvers at 7:00 PM and then the Midget 2s against Trenton at 9:00 PM. On Sunday, Feb. 27 there is a 1:00 PM game scheduled (if needed) between the Atom 1s and Collingwood. On Monday, Feb. 28, the Bantam 1s will host Collingwood (if needed) at 7:30 PM, followed by the Juveniles and Trenton at 9:15 PM.
