Lots of hugs, handshakes at 4-H reunion my Sougog Citisen -- Tuesday, February 16,1004 -- 11 by Heather McCrae "Pve benefited from 4-H and would encourage anybody else to get involved in the program". That statement was said repeatedly by a multitude of former and present "4-H'ers" who gathered for a grand reunion at the OMAF building in Port Perry last week. History about 4-H in Ontario is currently being researched for a book to be published early next year in time to commemorate the 80th room last week. One family that attended Is proud of three generation In 4-H. Pictured (In back) are Ross Evans, son Nell and wife Rose. In front are Barb Evans, and grandchiidren Anna, Graig and Carl. See story. Already she has received much memorabilia of those bygone days but to accumulate more annals the thought of having a reunion seemed to be the route to go. Folks of all ages throughout Durham Region attended the reunion last week and there _ was lots of laughter, handshakes and hugs as many recalled events and tales about their 4-H days. Among those present were a 'three generation 4-H family', Ross Evans, with his wife Barb; their son Neil and wife Rose and their three children Anna 14, Graig 11, and Carl 10. Mr. Evans Sr. told the Citizen he joined 4-H in 1945 when he was twelve years old and Bob Flett was his leader. Throughout his 4-H years he was a member of the dairy and grain clubs and has a year's stint in the local swine club, too. "4-H has definitely helped our family" Mr. Evans told the Citizen. "Today you have to be a good judge of livestock and have choice crops and 4-H gave me a good start in these two areas." He chuckled when he recalled the hi-light of the year was when you went to the annual 4-H banquet in the fall, as it seemed to be THE social function of the year for the bers and their lead: calf with the Uxbridge Dairy Calf Club. All of his brothers and sisters have been involved in 4H and his sister, Wendy, is currently a leader of a 4-H club in Uxbridge. Now, Neil's three children are involved in 4-H. For Anna, this is her fourth year in 4-H, being a member of the dairy and homemakers clubs. Craig has been in the dairy club for one year and Carl has completed one year in pre-4-H and is looking forward to joining the popular program this year. Anna has already finished eight projects and expects to stay in 4-H until she finishes her 30 projects and then earns a limited edition print. Neil Evans says it was his parent's influence that got him into 4-H. Ld "There are so many opportunities available through 4-H, such as scholarships and trips. There definitely are far more things you can get involved in and the leadership you gain in 4-H is excellent." Mrs. Shier was overwhelmed by the number of people who attended the reunion. Working with her locally on the history of 4-H are Jean Bailey, Marg Couperthwaite, Bob Flett, Dorothea Healm, Marlene Werry and Christine Dukelow. If any of our readers have information they would like to lend to Mrs. Shier and her you can contact the Mr. Evans' son, Neil, met his future wife at the Lindsay fair while he was showing his 4-H es) OMAF office at 1:800-263-8023 and leave a message.
