6 -- Sei Citizen ~ Fe 1994 => 4-H history to be documented in a book by Heather McCrae A book about the history of 4H in Ontario is soon to be published, but can only be properly done with the help of present and former club Three years ago, Dorothy Shier realized there had never been a book written on the history of 4- H in the province. Since 1995 for 4-H in Ontario, Mrs. Shier felt the need was greater now than ever to have a history of the program published and shared her concerns at a 4-H Council lle. "I just felt it was a shame nothing had ever been written about 4-H" she told the Citizen. "My family has been involved in this program for years and it's riched our lives and lebrates the 80th y i Shier (right) is currently working on a book about 4-H In the former Ontario County, now Durham West. Currently, there are many groups accumulating information on 4-H from all parts of the province. To pay for all the expenses, including having the book published, money has been raised through a raffle draw, silent auctions and private donations. Working with Mrs. Shier / locally are Jean Bailey, Marg Couperthwaite, Bob Flett, Dorothea Healm, Marlene Werry and Christine Dukelow. Their goal is to have the book ready for sale in January 1995, in time to celebrate the 80th year of 4-H in Ontario. This is whepé all former and present 4-H members of the "old Ontario county", now Durham West, can help. It's believed 4-H started in this area around 1947. The committee is looking for mémorabilia, such as old photographs, newspaper clippings, certificates, trophies otc. A reunion of former 4-H members and their leaders is being held at the OMAF building, 60 Vanedward Drive in Port Perry this Thursday, February 10, starting at 1:30 p.m. with coffee and cookies being served. Anyone who has been involved in 4-H over the last 79 years is Thyited to attend. Already the committee has received confirmation of former 4-H members attending that were involved in 4-H in the early 1960's. To date, Mrs. Shier and her committee have received many old photographs. During my visit with her last week it brought back many warm and wonderful memories of my own 4-H years (OI Tg 2d aT) (ol M1 \ [1A g FES LICR CL CEI le Ke NEHER Thanks to AGFA processing, we give you crisp, sharp photos and when I saw pictures of my dad, other family bers and os help make this history book lete and memorable as friends who were in the calf club with me. Dorothy Shier is no stranger to 4-H. She's been involved in the program since 1966, mostly as a leader and has received her 25 year certificate. "I like working with young people, she told the Citizen, "and enjoying seeing what they can achieve." She and her husband, Keith, live on Elm Heights dairy farm in Wilfrid possible, plan on attending the social time at the OMAF office this Thursday. But, if you can't make it, yet have some 'memories' you would like to share with the committee, you can deliver or mail them to the OMAF office in Port Perry, c/o Dorothy Shier. "Most farmers regard the farm as their retirement nest egg, so 1 believe it is very important to retain this deduction," Shepherd said. Shepherd, recently appointed to the powerful finance committee, said most farmers live a difficult financial life requiring constant investment in new machinery and buildings. "The low return on these investments puts a constant hole in their pockets, leaving them unable to invest in RRSPs or to save generally," Shepherd said. He told the Commons that doing away with the exemption would not significantly add to government revenues. "Revenue from this source declined by 3.3 percent from 1989 to 1990 and by 19 percent from 1990 to 1991," Shepherd * said. Had the farmers' deduction not been available in 1991, the Durham MP pointed out, it would only have accounted for $235 million.
