Sally Martin (president) and Rob Johnston (vice-president) are heading up the 1994 executive of the Port Perry Tennis Club. See story. Port Perry Tennis Club plans for '94 by Heather McCrae The new executive of the Port Perry Tennis Club met at Emiel's on February 3 to start the planning for this years events. With Sally Martin taking over the reins as President, and Rob Johnston as vice-President, the year promises to offer a lot of tennis for all members, whether they're new to the sport or an 'old pro'. A top priority item for the club this year, and one that's very costly, is to have the courts resurfaced. in spite of a dunking in Lake Scugog last Hollowe'en, the nets, screens and posts seem to be none the worse for wear. As usual, the Club will be offering six weeks of lessons in the spring and the popular three weeks of summer camp. Club and OTA sanctioned tournaments will be planned at the club's next meeting, being held in mid-April. Ontario must create better business climate If Ontario is to broaden its tax base the provincial government must first create a business environment under which farmers and other small business can thrive and create new wealth and jobs. That was the message the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) presented to the Ontario Legislature's Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs Feb.1. Pointing out to the committee that farmers' spending on repairs has almost caught up with their investment in new machinery and buildings. OFA President Roger said "this is an ominous trend. If farmers are to be competitive, we need to modernize our plant and equipment, just like any other industry." To help accomplish this, the OFA called for the provincial government to introduce an investment tax credit on eligible farm machinery, equipment and building materials. "A similar federal program introduced in 1992 was responsible for a 15 percent increase in the sale of new equipment," said Mr. George. "A provincial program would not only be good for farmers, but for the economy as a whole." Addressing the issue of rural economic development, Mr. George cited fuel ethanol production as an example of a value-added, environmentally friendly, fledgling industry. "We have an opportunity to turn corn into fuel, reduce emissions from carbon based fuels and create investment opportunities and jobs for rural people," said Mr. George 'However, we need a commitment from the government for long term preferential tax treatment of ethanol blended gasolines as an incentive to the development of a fuel alcohol industry." The OFA presentation to the committee also commented on the recommendations of the Fair Tax Commission. The OFA will be meeting with the Finance Minister on February 16 to discuss this issue indepgh Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 8, 1994 --31 Members of the Uxbridge Skating Club performed well at thelr own Uxbridge Invitational held recently. To assist those customers who have not yet made the change, Bell has recently introduced a "branding" message, played before a customer's call is completed. This message reminds the customer to insert the proper area code before the seven digit number, when placing local calls from area code 416 to 905, or 905 to 416. According to Jim Rivett, Bell Ontario's Regional Manager - Network Maintenance, "Since we've introduced the branding message, we've found it has promoted customer usage of the correct dialing requirements by as much as 50 percent." The split of area code 416 officially began on October 4, 1993. The introduction of the 905 area code is a long-term solution to allow for telecommunications growth. Bell Canada wants to ensure a smooth transition for its customers.
