26 -- Se Citizen -- On Saturday, February 6, Haugen's Bulls Novice House League team, travelled to Lindsay to play in the Ops Novice Tournament. In the first game, the boys came up against a strong team from Sutton. This was Haugen's first tournament play this year, so the téam hit the ice a little nervous and disorganized. Sutton took immediate advantage of this and scored a couple of early goals. While the Bulls got stronger as the game went on, they were not able to overcome their slow start and victory went to the Sutton club. The team met in Lindsay Tuesday, February 8, 1994 Bulls go on a rampage at Ops Novice tourney between games for lunch, hosted by team sponsor Haugens (Thanks Chris and Helen!) and to plan strategy for game 2 against Peterborough - a must win for both teams. This time, when Haugens Bulls stampeded onto the ice, it was clear they were ready to play. Scoring started early in the first period, a nice goal by Travis Black assisted by Scott Lennox and Justin Shinn. For a moment, it appeared Peterborough would storm right back. v Peterborough's top scorer broke in alone on Bulls goaltender Scott Honey, and fires one toward the top corner. With lightning reflexes, Scott made Rockettes tune up for Kingston The Shepstone Haulage Petite Ringette team was back in action after a two week layoff with games in Richmond Hill and at home to Whitby. In the game against Richmond Hill, the Rockettes played well but came up short in a 6-3 loss. The girls started out strong as Alaina scored on the opening free pass from Sarah. It caught Richmond Hill by surprise, but must have also woke them up as they came back with two quick goals to take the lead and held it for the rest of the game. Rhea got the Haulers back in the hunt with a nice goal to even the game at two but again the Richmond Hill team struck quickly for a 3-2 lead. Stacey continued our comeback with a backhand goal that hopefully would rally our troops. But as the game progressed, their goalie got stingier with every shot and after a couple more goals against, the momentum was with the ition and any pt to rally was stopped. The game at home against Whitby was a different story with the girls playing a more disciplined style of ringette with better execution and a lot more zip. The Rockettes first goal proved that as Leanne D. finished off a passing play from Alaina and Rhea and muscled fine form and stole several sure goals from her rivals. Port Perry went ahead 5-1 with Katherine scoring on a scramble in front of the net as she picked up the loose ring and flipped it over the goalie. Nicole rounded out the scoring for the Haulers on a hard sweep shot to the corner with Rhea assisting. But Whitby never gave up and got closer with two goals in the last five minutes, Also playing a strong game in the win were Heather and Shannon on defense, and Sheena and Kimberley on forward. This game proved to be a good tune-up for this week's tournament in Kingston as the Rockettes will be playing strong teams from Eastern Ontario. The hard work and practices are helping to improve the team and hopefully will pay big dividends this weekend. the glove save to spoil a great The next few minutes showed good end to end hockey. The Haugens defence squad of Chris Wygerde, Joel Campbell, Gregg Jeffrey, Russell Lee, Scott Symes and Kevin Gloster played flawless defence holding Peterborough at bay. Then the Bulls broke loose. Devon Ferguson from Chris Wygerde, Jesse Mischtian from Gregg Jeffrey, Jesse again from Scott Symes and Russell Lee, and Travis again from Scott Lennox - 5-0 at the end of the first period. The second period was all Haugens. Jordan Froats found the top corner from Chris and Kevin early in the period. Then Gregg Jeffrey blasted one from the slot, assisted by Alex Nicolaou and Devon to make it 7-0. Another by Jesse from Travis and Reid Harris and two more by Devon with Alex and Gregg assisting brought it to 10- 0 at the end of the second. The third opened with Travis adding to his total on a nice three way passing play from Shane Jeffrey and Rob Potier. Then Peterborough tried to turn it on. Bcott made several sensational saves to kill any chance of a Peterborough comeback. Joel Campbell took a pass from Kevin and fed it up the middle to Travis - no mistakes and another goal. Chris added one from the slot and Travis, Justin, Kevin and Jordan combined to finish the scoring. Final - Haugens Raging Bulls 15, Peterborough 2. In the third game, Haugens met the home town Ops for the consolation championship after only an hour break. Devon and Jordan potted two markers, but this proved not to be enough as the better-rested Ops team simply outskated our players in the latter part of the game. The boys played hard, but the Ops team finished with the tournament win. It was a great day with lots of fun and good hockey.
