The Merchants have had things pretty much their own way in what has been a rough, fight-filled series to date as the bad blood that developed [between these teams late in the season continues into the playoffs. On Saturday night in front of a large crowd at the Little Britain Arena, M d three , the Merchants pounded the * Bruins 5-1 in a game that featured several fights and well over 100 minutes in penalties. Port trails in Juvenile series by Paul Wylie For many years Port Perry and Uxbridge have met in the first round of playoffs, and this year is no different. On January 31, Port travelled Broomball highlights The battle for the Broomball playoff spots is now resolved as to the top four teams who will go on. But it is yet to be decided as to who will end up in first as only a single point separates Monsma Electric and Woody's Auctions with two games remaining. It also appears that the scoring race will not be decided until the final week as the top five are bunched tightly together. In game one of this last week's play, the B & R Swampers solidified their hold on third place as they downed the Framer's Gallery 3-1. Brian Pomeroy form Dale Lown provided the lone marker in the opening period for B & R. Early in the second half they pulled ahead by a pair as Pomeroy earned himself another point in setting up Mike Mole's goal. The Framer's pulled within one two minutes later as Keith Dalton fed Eric Kristensen. B & R put the icing on the cake when Pomeroy scored his second with Dan Taylor drawing the assist. Game two had the Blackstock Brewers up against Woody's and in the spoiler role drew a point, thereby relegating them temporarily to second place. Woody's scored first midway through the second after the opening period had ended in a scoreless tie. Gene Woodrow from Neil Woodrow accounted for the goal. Blackstock was not to be denied as they knotted it shortly thereafter with Ron Short scoring unassisted, They then pulled ahead a minute later when Short and Tom Wotten set up Scott MacLennan. Before the end of the period, Woody's tied it up with Ken St. Amant scoring from Gord Jones, and Jim Gregg therefore setting up overtime, In the extra period Blackstock Wayne McGuigan from Dave Dalton. Woody's replied with Gregg notching the game's final goal from Randy Sullivan, and Neil Woodrow. First place now belongs solely to the Brooklin Bruins as they blanked Emmerson's Insurance by a 5-0 total. The Bruins netted a pair in the first half with Rob Kivell and Nick Attwood doing the damage. Rick Mitchell, Wayne Tate, Jim Mason and Ken Lynde supplied the assists. In the second half Ron Attwood scored a pair with the final tally going to Chris Lepine. Nick Attwood was the playmaker of the period as he set up all three goals with a single assist also going to Ron Attwood on Lynde's Between the pipes, Jim Raaphorst recorded leading eighth shutout to reduce his godls average to 4 sparkling a again went ahead on a goal by to their archrivals' arena to open a potentially long series. Brendan Heffernan Uxbridge on the board first, after jumping on a bad bounce, which fooled Port's goaltender. Mi later, Port when Ridgway and McEnaney maintained control of the puck as they crossed over into the opposition's territory. As soon as Vander Slagt moved into the zone, he received the puck on his back hand, turned, and sent a floater towards the net; through some traffic. It wasn't a pretty goal, but it counted Uxbridge regained the lead shortly into the second, when Johnston and Zeller intercepted a bad cross-ice pass by Port's defence, and Darren walked in on & breakaway and put it past Willetts. Port tied the game up once again, when Darrell Vanderlight carried the puck just inside Usxbridge's blue line and popped one past Shawn Wilson's glove. Although the first game of the series ended in 2-2 tie, the game was filled with many large hits and few penalties. ' The second match was hosted on Thursday tight by Port, ded While Uxbridge changed their goaltender, going with Shanon Tindall, Port stuck with Matt Willetts. The first period saw both teams exchange a goal. Port opened the scoring when Vander Slagt pinched in for a one-timer, being fed by . Tindall made the stop, but Garvock found the five-hole with the rebound. Darrin Zeller capitalized, and tied the game up, aftr a breakdown by Port's defence. Lunney and Perry got the assists. As the second period came to a close, Matt Willetts made some large saves - one being a breakaway. Perhaps this would spark the Port's offence for the upcoming thirds. However, neither team came out flying after the break. The game remained 1-1 until only three minutes left. Denny James picked up a loose puck and fed Johnston, who slipped behind Port's defence. Darren scored the winning goal on a breakaway. If Port plans on playing hockey any further than the first round, they are going to have to play a lot smarter on defence,as well as take some risks on offence. Port will host Uxbridge again this Thursday night. It was nice to #00 the crowd of fans who turned out for Port's first home-playoff me. 3. 4 yd
