Rockettes worked for hose silver m medals The Shepstone Haulage Petite B Rockettes earned a well- deserved silver medal after finishing in second place in the Whitby-Brooklin Ringette tournament with a heart- breaking 6-4 lass in the final toa team. * With the girls wearing their bandanas (a new ides) the ..bandetees stole one 6-5 over.the * host Whitby team. Whitby jumped out to a 3-0 lead arid held it going into the second period] After being outplayed in thé first, our Port girls got back in, the game with two quick goals iP a span of 36 seconds. First at #31, : Stacey Cunningham finally pierced the Whitby armour with Katherine Cooke and SarahiVerschuuren assisting, Then at}3:07 Heather Reid passed up%to Leanre Davison and she infiltrated the defense to cut the legd to 3-2. But 11 seconds ldter, it was another Whitby marker and another two minutes later that looked to seal our girls' fate. With the score 5-2 and less than six 'minutes left, we'vg all heard the saging "It ain't over til it's over". The turning.point in the game came on a fine -way combo with Heather cleaving our zone to Katherine whbd, spotted Sheena Christie going for the net and the perfect pass put her in o clear ahd she slid the ring the goalie for her second with her second of the game on an offensive free-pass screen- shot that the Whitby goalie never daw. With two minutes remaining, our girls tied the game with Nicole Virtue passing up over the blue line to Stacey and she notched her second of the game, 'With only 54 seconds left, the winning goal was scored on a give and go with Nicole passing to Sarah and she moved into the attacking zone and with a flip shot, the ring txzickled over the line. A great comeback, girls, with "our goalie, Jill Pashley, preserving the win with several key saves and she even survived her own team piling on her as the final buzzer sounded. The next game on Saturday morning against Kingston was a lot closer than the 5-1 loss as the girls' played well but no lucky - breaks. Our offense didn't put much pressure on the Kingston goalie and it was Rhea Baxter assisting on Stacey's goal for our lone marker. With the Kingston team already in the final with three wins, our next game against Oshawa would decide their opponent. All we needed was a tie to get We appreciate all your help The Scugog Citizen would like to thank all the team reps in all sports who contribute articles to these pages each week. With Oshawa up 1-0, Rhea continued her strong play with an unassisted goal at 4:44. Leanne Layzell put us ahead 2-1 a minute later with Nicole and Stacey assisting. But #15 tied it up 20 seconds later. Leanne Davison made it 3- 2 on a passing play from Alaina Dayis and Sarah. The Rockettes went ahead 4-2 with only seven minutes left on Stacey's goal with the assist to Rhea. But Oshawa battled back with two goals to tie the game and make the last two minutes very interesting and exciting. But we held on for the tie and on to the final. It was an entirely different game than the earlier 5-1 loss as the girls were ready for the challenge. The Rockettes gave the Kingston team a real fight with only a one goal difference throughout the entire game. Stacey put us ahead 1-0 with her first of three goals and was flying out there the whole game. Kingston took advantage of every opportunity and tied it a minute later. They scored in the last minute of the first period to goup 2-1. Stacey put us back on even keel with Rhea and Kimberley Carrique assisting. Kingston scored when they had to and went ahead less than a minute later for a 8-2 lead. Our little warrior, Sarah, took a pass from Katherine and snuck in through the defense to tie the game at three. But again, Kingston came right back to take the lead. Port kept up the fight and with Jill playing The ore Wendel Scores A Nore He Saves a, every goal Wendel Clark scores raises money for the fight against liver disease. And that could save lives. The pressure paid off with making a pass to Stacey who cut in for the net and beat their goalie with a shot to the corner, Kingston scored the go- ahead and winning goal with just over five minutes left. Our gir}s tried their best and just missed on a couple of scoring chances and even with Jill pulled in last minute for the extra attacker, the Kingston defense held its ground. A'real thriller of a game and a treat to watch from the stands. - It was a strong effort from the whole teat; and defensively and offensively, things abe coming Since moving back, Shannon' Warriner has improved with each game and played her best ringette this weekend.
