The 52-year old engineer from South Colton, New York will have it much easier this coming weekend as he competes in the Port Perry sled races over courses of four and six miles. Thew told the Citizen in a phone interview that he usually competes i id-digtunce races of up to 200 But as he raises and breeds pure-bred Siberian Huskies and the Port Perry races are limited to that breed, he's more than pleased to be part of the first ever sanctioned sled races in this community. He's not a stranger to Canada, however, as he has raced in events at Bancroft and As for the Ididerod, 1200 miles from Anchorage to Nome including stretches of the Yukon and the Bering Sea, he said his main goal was just to finish, "It is extremely difficult, ve: stressful on the dogs," he told the Citizen. He started with 18 dogs and finished with 16 as two were taken out of the race for medical reasons. His was the only pure- bred Siberian team in the event. If it was tough on the dogs, it was just as tough on Thew over the 17 days he was on the trail. He broke three ribs and continued the final 800 miles in this condition. Would he tackle the Ididerod again? "Absolutely. If I retire soon enough and am still racing, sure I'd do that one again." Thew owns Call of the Wild Kennels in South Colton, NY. Kennel manager Cathy Hughes will also be in Port Perry to race this weekend. The racing, part of the Scugog Snow Flake Festival, will be held Saturday from noon to 3:00 PM, and again Sunday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The starting line is at the corner of Perry and Queen Streets. The sleds will race down Queen Street to Lake Scugog and then cover a course of either four or six miles before crossing the finish line on Queen Street.
