wy 10 -- Scugog Citizen -- SET January 4, 1994 Schindler's List Pe grim masterpiece of film at the flics with Schindler's List Directed by Steven Speilberg Champlain Centre, Whitby, Ahhh After watching Steven Speilberg's holocaust drama, Schindler's List, I sat in the stoney silence of the packed theatre trying to comprehend what I had just experienced. This is not the type of film you watch, this is a work that is to be experienc Tom beginning to end. Nothing will quite prepare you for the horrors you will see, nothing will prepare you for the sense of grief that will no doubt overwhelm you at the end of the picture; it is shattering. Three things where very clear to me after seeing the film; 1) Schindler's List is the best film of 1993, 2) Steven Speilberg will never be thought of the same again, and 3) Since the release of Jaws (1975), Speilberg hasbeen a one man entertainment industry, who despite many great films, has never really been taken seriously as a director. The thinking has always been, his films make money, how can be art? Yet to his credit, Close > Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) is among the best films of the seventies, E.T.: The Extraterrestrial (1982) is a masterpiece of fantasy, Empire of the Sun (1987) is a sadly under rated war epic that was the best film of 1987, and the Indiana Jones series is legend. Earlier this year, Jurassic Park became the highest grossing film of all time, passing E.T. and several other Speilberg Films on the way to the top. With three Oscar nominations and two much more publicized Oscar snubs, Speilberg -has often longed publicly to be taken seriously as a director. . Schindler's List will do it for him, in fact, he will finally win the best director Oscar he so richly deserves for this startling masterwork that will go down in cinema history as one of the greatest films ever made. Schindler's List tells the true story of German businessman, Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) who saved the lives of 1,100 Jews all the while courting the Nazis who surrounded him. Filmed on location at Auschwitz, this tliree and a half hour, black and white film, contains some of the most harrowing scenes itted to film. The ramp in the Warsaw ghetto is simply the beginning of hell for many of the Jews sent to the death camps. Speilberg captures the stark desolation of the camps as no other filmmaker ever has. Never was | thinking I was watching a film, but rather confident I was simply watching events unfold. 'Perhaps it is because Speilberg's direction has never been as sure as it is here, Rather than startle us with sweeping long shots, he chose to film much of Schindler's List with hand held cameras, so what we see is an almost documentary look that evokes the many hours of grainy footage the Nazis shot for historical and propaganda use. I suppose one must deal with the countless deaths in the film. A warning for the faint of heart, the death scenes in the film are among the most brutal I have evemgeen in a film, but likely because they are re-created so realistically and we know that they actually happened. The Nazis slaughtered Jews with such a cold, matter of factness, how could it be anything but chilling? We see * men and women killed for the sole reason that they are Jews; we see women awaiting in terror for either a shower of water or ever showing us the unspeakable atrocities committed by the Nazis, but he does so for a reason; his courage as a Director has never been more eviderit. In many other films Nazis. are tPeated essentially as terminators, unfeeling killers with a swastika on their arms. The Nazis in this film are family men, lovers of beautiful women and fine wines, they are human beings, which makes their acts of brutality all the more despicable. By making them human, their acts of violence are slammed home to us in such a way that the holocaust seems very close, very real, not simply pictures in a history book. Also; Schindler's acts of heroism are seen as great because the man so openly feigns friendship with the butchers, all the while sympathizing with the Jews. Neeson's marvelous, performance is but it is Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes who steal the show. Kinsley is quietly remarkable ds Neeson's Jewish assistant Stern, who acts as Schindler's conscience throughout much of the film. British actor Fiennes is a shocking revelation as Goeth, the very human. very vicious Nazi who revels in the massacre of the Jews because he: believes in it. There is nothing cartoonist in Fiennes's work, he is evil personified, to he sure, yet possibly in love with his Jewish housekeeper whom me claims "Is not a human being in the true sense of the word." You will leave Schindler's List' deeply shaken, but grateful for such a feeling. Speilberg has given us a Masterwork that allows us to say, for the first time,"Yes | understand." It's one of the greatest movies ever made. Playgrounds can be dangerous With winter here, children are as active as ever.
