wp $6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Sept 5 Rybka-Becker kicks off NDP hope in Durham For Lucy Rybka-Becker, one of the central issues in the federal election campaign will be job creation. Ms. Rybka-Becker, who is running in the riding of Durham for the New Democratic Party said the the federal government to reduce the deficit at the same time. Ms. Rybka-Becker said the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a bad deal for Canada as it will put Canadian, workers against M, NDP national paign slogan this election is "Canada works when Canadians work." "With 1.6 million pedple out of work, we have to have'a jobs plan to promote job creation and protect jobs," she told the Citizen in an interview last week. Commenting on Prime Minister Kim Campbell's focus on deficit reduction, Mas. Rybka-Becker said it is a mistake to concentrate totally on that. "People out of work are looking to their government for help," she said. The NDP has unveiled a comprehensive policy for job creation that includes an infrastructure program for roads and communications; tax reform based on ability to pay; a national child care program to double the number of spaces in five years; venture capital through a national investment fund; a national training strategy and a program for research and development. It also calls for a pro-Canada trade policy that would increase trade within the GATT framework. This would create 500,000 jobs over five years and according to an independent research company would allow "People are worried about losing their jobs, they are worried about the future for the children," she said. The 30-year old Rybka- Becker said she welcomed the election call last week as it will give her the chance to get out on the campaign trail. She was nominated by her party last January. Born and raised in Durham, she has worked for newspapers in Oshawa and Whitby and is now employed by the provincial government. She will take a leave of absence during the campaign and if elected will resign her job to work full time as a member of Parliament. Ms. Rybka-Becker will be hosting an open house at her campaign headquarters this yd 14,1993 Sisters Leanne and Col A len Barfoot of Greenbank placed 1st In their grade divisions In the Junior Craft section at the recent Port Perry Fair.
