wp 6-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , May 4, 1993 The Golden Slippers now on tape Over the last few years, The Golden Slippers have performed more than 250 lives shows delighting countless thousands with their toe-tappin' brand of down home music. Last week, for the first time ever, the group spent several hours in an Oshawa recording studio putting some 25 popular numbers on tape. Called "It's Never Too Late," the Tape will go on sale in about three weeks so fans of this popular Scugog Township group can listen to their music at home, at the cottage or im the The members of the group are excited about the recording session, and Doreen Adam, one of the founders, said "we all hope it won't be our last." Asked why the Golden Slippers decided why to bring out a tape at this time, Mrs. Adam said it was at the request of audiences. Everywhere the group plays, people ask if there are any tapes or albums available, she explained. There are about 14 members in the group (the number varies and their specialty is Irish, Scottish and Old Time jigs and reels. Or, as one member of the Slippers described it last week, any kind of music that is "toe tappin,' old time, finger snappin', hootin' and hollerin." Most of the Slippers are from the Scugog Township area but a couple of members hail from as far away as Toronto and Kingston. They have performed all over southern Ontario, including Roy Thompson Hall and recently, they did a gig in Florida. The average age of the group members is....well, who's counting. £ibut Kay Hanley (Mrs. Adam's mother) is soon 79 and John Beckett, who plays drums, is 75. The group was formed six years when Mrs. Adam decided to learn to play the violin. She phoned Edna Beckett and Helen Redman (both fellow residents of Scugog Island) and one thing led to another. Next thing you know they formed the group and have been playing together ever since. One of the members, Ethyl Freeman, lost both her legs just about a year ago. She barely missed a beat as six weeks later, she was back playing. As for the name "Golden Slippers," that comes from the fact most wear slippers when they rehearse. The group takes three months off each winter as many head south for some relaxation. But each spring, they tune up the guitars and fiddles and start getting ready for a busy spring, summer and fall. For the recording session last Friday, the Slippers rehearsed twice a week. On May 6, the group will perform at the Good Age Show in turn to page seven The Board of Directors of Community Memorial Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital Foundation request the honour of your presence at the 'Turning of the Sod' for Stephen B.
