- 6 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 27, 1993 Board delays passing $383 M. school budget The economic restraint package announced by the provincial government last week has caused a delay in passing the Durham Board of Education budget. Trustees were set to pass a $383 million budget Monday evening, but approval has been delayed at least ten days until the Board finds out exactly what impact the provincial restraints will have. "It's very baffling, gireal mess, " said Scughg trustee Bobbie Drew Jhte Monday evening - "We (the board) don't know what the impact will be and we're not sure at this time if the province knows," she said. The Durham Board was told about a month ago it would be getting $3 million in re- structuring grants this year. However, the statement from Queens Park last week cut this grant and now the Board will receive about $1.4 million. As well, there are other cuts for computers ($1 million) and $90,000 for portables. This means the Board will have to either cut these amounts from its budget or raise the mill rate to cover the WE DELIVER! - HOURS - Monday to Saturday 8:30 10 8:00; Sunday 10:00 to 6:00 Just 2 Miles South of Port Perry on the Oshawa Rd. 12550 Simcoe Street 985-4353 < SEEDS < SOIL <« PEAT MOSS < FERTILIZER If you can't make it in, just give us a call ... shortfall. But Mrs. Drew said the Board won't be making any budget decisions until the financial issues are clarified from Queens Park. The budget that was supposed to get trustee approval on Monday would have raised property taxes about 3.9 per cent on a home with an assessed value of $3,000. That would have amounted to t under $50 for the NS in Scugog Township. The $383 million budget is up over last year's budget of $358 million. Contract extended Scugog council and the unionized Township employees have agreed to extend the current collective agreement This means the employees will receive no increases in salaries or benfits in 1993. The extension of the contract was ratified recently by the employees in the CUPE bargaining unit and township council Monday afternoon agreed to the extension. Councillor Yvonne Christie said the two meetings between union reps and the Township committee were cordial and co- operative, keeping in mind the extremely tight financial restraints. The salary and benefits freeze will apply to a non-union municipal staff as well, said administrator Earl Cuddie.
