Fastball fans will have plenty to cheer about Fastball fans in Scugog Township will have plenty to cheer about this summer as three local clubs will face each other in the A Division of the Oshawa City and District League. The Port Perry Eagles are back again for another season and the two other teams are the Greenbank Gamblers and the Port Perry Midget Merchants. For the Gamblers, it's a return to this League after two controversial seasons with the Peterborough City Loop, and Gamblefgganager Rodd Foster is excited about the prospects "I think this League will be very competitve this season," he told the Citizen. Gamblers won the Peterborough Crown last fall, but the club was extremely disappointed in a League ruling which meant the team did not have any playoffs on its home diamond in Greenbank. Foster said the Gamblers have bolstered the pitching staff with the addition of Jim Chilvers, an intense, hard throwing right hander who can also do some damage with the bat. He'll join southpaw Mark Goreski to give the team a strong one-two punch from both sides of the rubber. Ken Goreski is returning as head coach and Don Phinney will work as assistant coach this season. Gamblers are looking at a couple of new players (not confirmed as yet) for the season, but their line-up will include numerous veterans familiar to Greenbank fans over the last few years. Paul Goreski will work behind the plate with back-up from Greg Warriner and Gary Baker. Other familiar gloves include Trevor Till, John Foster, Brian Till, Don Beaton, Terry Till, Pete Oosterholt, Dave Bacon, Mike Giroux and Rod Reel. Foster said the team will be entering OASA competition at the Intermediate A level and is planning a trip to the nation's FARM SPRUCE -5t0 7' X SPRUCE - 1010 12" ....... $99.00 CLEARANCE | piNE-710 9 ~ BUY | PINE-101012" ccc... $69.00 DIRECT SUGAR MAPLE ' & SAVE - 45mm, 1 3/4" cal. .... $89.00 CRIMSON KING MAPLE All Trees - 50 mm, 2" cal. ........ $110.00 come in SILVER MAPLE - 70/80 mm. Gamblers home games this season will be on Thursday nights and the schedule starts in mid-May. The Port Perry Midgets are in the Oshawa City and District League this season for a couple of reasons, according to Ron Redman who is working as a coach with Wayne Venning and manager Bob VanderSlagt The team wants to cut down on travelling to league games and also wants to face stiffer competition on a game-in, game-out basis to sharpen the skills from tournaments and provincial competitions The Midgets, who won all- Ontario last "Season, are virtually a stand-pat squad this year and they're taking dead aim at a berth in the Nationals. The team will also be hosting the OASA Midget B tournament here in Port Perry this year. The Midgets again this year will be counting on the strong pitching arms of Chad Venning, Denis Smith and Jeff Card, and they have a lot of guys on the roster who can knock the cover off the ball. Redman said facing the tough pitching in League games will be a good test for the batters and will work to their advantage in tournaments. The Port Perry Eagles will be looking to re-kindle the spirit that brought them an all- Ontario shield two years ago. The Eagles this year are currently looking for a sponsor (or two) said Todd Wilbur, who along with Larry Pilkey will handle the coaching duties. Tony Oxley will manage the squad as long-time manager Doug Scott is taking the year off. Wilbur said the A Division of the League will be a good one, especially with Greenbank and the Port Midgets. "We're looking forward to it," he told the Citizen.
