Donations to the three-day Food Drive which ended on Saturday were less than in previous years, said Ann Waninkhof, a volunteer with Operation Scugog. "It has been very slow, probably the worst year ever," she said Saturday afternoon as donations trickled in to the drop-off centre at the Port Perry Fire Hall. Mrs. Wanninkhof said she wasn't sure why donations are - off this year, but it probably has something to do with the overall economic picture. No, there should not be food blanks. But what can we do? We can't put any more expenses on the gover t; taxes are too high About 25 people use the Operation Scugog Food Bank on a regular basis, many of them victims of the economic hard times. "After paying rent and utilities first, they don't have the money for food," said Mrs. Wanninkhof. Asked whether she feels Food Banks should be a function of government rather than volunteer agencies, Mrs. Wanninkhof shrugged and said "the solution is to get people asitis." Families with young children make up the majority of those using the Food Bank in Scugog. Most are getting some form of social assistance, Ul, or are waiting for their benefits to start. . Mrs. Wanninkhof, who is a supervisor with the Durham Region Social Services Department, said "we should not be complaining, we should be grateful for the (food) donations we are getting." Glen Powell and sister Lori of.Port Perry made a nice donation to Operation Scugog Food Bank on Saturday, but the food drive this year fell short of expectations. See story. cud $2.00 OFF Any Reg.
