wp" 13-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 3, 1993 = Dragon slowly taking shape In Ken Lavalette's workshop a dragon is slowly taking shape. Ken is the owner of Woodwind Yachts in Nestleton and he is now working on the restoration of the "Chimera," a 30-foot Dragon Class racing sloop, originally built in Germany some 40 years ago. Actually, Ken's work is more total reconstruction than restoration as he has been able to salvage only about ten per cent of the original structure, including the cast iron keel. The sloop will still be recognized as long as it contains ten per cent of the original structure by volume, Ken told the Citizen Sunday afternoon as he hosted an open house at the Woodwind shop. This particular Dragon has sailed all over the world and Ken believes it was raced competitively in the 1964 Olympics. At this moment the craft looks anything like a" Dragon. Tt sits upsidedown on the shop floor as Ken and his associates re-build it literally piece by piece. They have been at it for several months and the Dragon won't be ready for its new owner in Toronto almost a year from now. Ken, who has restored many wooden boats over the years, "rescued" this Dragon as it was about to be chain-sawed into pieces. "I said 'wait a minute.' I can do something with that boat," Ken recalls. He had to straighten up Marina storage fees and the Dragon was his. Once he began working on restoration, he quickly found the project would be a complete reconstruction. This is Ken's third Dragon restoration, but the most extensive by far, and Ken admits that yes, this one is a real challenge for himself, wife Debbie and employees Doug McGrath and Montie Masterson. Only the finest materials will be used in the reconstruction: Honduras mahogany planking over steam-bent white oak frames. The decking will be of teak and ten coats of varnish will be applied before it leaves Ken's shop for its new home in Toronto Harbour, with a prior stop at next season's annual Boat Show. "It will be strong, safe and the best looking Dragon in the world," Ken said with a smile. At $70,000 it's not cheap. But Ken points out that a new Dragon made from fibre glass costs $80,000. "The customer is getting a completely re-built wooden sloop, something to treat with pride," he said. Woodwind Yachts held a workshop on Saturday that attracted nearly 200 interested people. And there was a steady Ken Lavalette (righT) and Doug McGrath of W stream of visitors to the spacious shop on Sunday afternoon for the Open House. All had one thing in common, of course: a love of fine wooden Yachts {| boats. This Dragon's name "Chimera" is very apt. It means a mythical three-headed dragon. in front of the Dragon. They are restoring this 30 ft racing sloop plece by plece, a project that won't be completed until early next year. (See story). Cawker School invites Career Day speakers " S.A.
