my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesd February 9, 1993-- 11 4 I ---------------- LETTERS TO THE EDITOR 4 To the Editor: In response to "AIDS Works to Educate People" letter to the editor, I would like to say that I too have lost friends to AIDS. All were homosexual men and I have great compassion for these people and their families. But all the compassion in the world won't bring them back; compassion won't stop the spread of the disease and compassion won't protect future generations. Only a societal change will prove an effective means of prevention. Anything less is just a bandage solution to a problem out of control, affecting the entire world. The cure for AIDS is illusive. Dr. David Cohn (Denver Disease Control) says ".b of the l way h the disease multiplies within the lyfnph cells, each case potentially can be a different strain. For each case of AIDS, there is probably as many different mutations of the virus. If a vaccine were developed for one strain of the virus, the virus would soon mutate and the vaccine would be ineffective. In additign to its high rate of mutation, the AIDS virus multiplies up to 1,000 times faster than other viruses." Each case is so different it is like a different disease each time, so even if a cure is found, it would be for one victim. Dr. Fred Schwartz says that to bring AIDS under control we must stop what started it in the first place. "If we don't stop ual conduct, we will not stop the spread of AIDS." Everyone knows and health officials agree that homosexual sex is the most efficient way to transmit the disease. Health and Welfare Canada stated in its brochure "Aids, the New Facts of Life," that Canada has one of the highest rates of infection in the developed world and that 77.5 per cent of patients had contacted AIDS through homosexual sex. Heterosexual sex accounted for 7.7 per cent of AIDS cases. But AIDS is a preventable disease. It is a life-style disease, or self-induced. So in the name of prevention (if that is what the AIDS Committee of Durham is all about) why not warn young people against homosexual behavior instead of handing out brochures and Durham Police have charged a 28 year old Whitby man in connection with a hit and run incident Jan. 23 that left a Beaverton man in serious condition in Orillia Hospital. Police said Christopher Alec Johnson of Scott Street, Whitby appeared at the Pickering detachment office on January 26 accompanied by his lawyer. Johnson has been charged with criminal negligence Arrest over hit and run causing bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident and driving while under suspension. Police seized the Ford Bronco 4X4 used in the alleged hit and run. The incident which occurred on Osborne Street in Beaverton just after midnight left 29-year Ross Edward Houle of Beaverton in serious condition with multiple injuries. / ~ We have four different books of wedding invitations to order from. And homosexual newspapers soliciting patrons to their gay bars; and what parks to cruise to find a lover (Xtra, Aug. 92, P.11) What has this got to do with AIDS prevention? Sounds more "like gay propaganda to me-- and supported by our tax dollars. "How to" information on oral and anal sex comes compete with photos of nude men. "For us having safer-sex means feeling good about who we are as gay men," says a little halo around the head of etal change to stop spread of AIDS one youngster. "Having sex with men is natural. It's a natural part of life, positive living." Positive living? Or a guarantee to test positive with HIV? Hepatitis runs rampant throughout the homosexual community. They die at an average age of 42 years without the incidence of AIDS and at 39 years if AIDS is a factor, reports Dr. Paul Cameron (Family Research Institute, Washington D.C.) This is 30 years shorter than the average lifespan of a married heterosexual man. It appears they have declared war on their own sex. But what consenting adults do is their own business. Glamorizing a life-style which fosters the disease and then preying on young teens is quite another. And doing this at tax- payers expense is unforgiveable. (Toronto Sun, Oct. 92) Maybe the nurse who works at Casey House in Toronto should find out who the AIDS Committee of Durham really are. They facilitate a lot more than just AIDS information.
