Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 2, 1993--5 <= Canadian dream for Russian pianist When Sergie Pavlov found himself stranded and broke in Canada last March, he decided to stay in this country and work on his goal of being a concert pianist. He's now a landed immigrant and says he has absolutely no regrets about his decision to stay in Canada. The 38-year Russian was in Port Perry Sunday evening to give a concert of classical musical at the United Church; a concert that included the better known works of Chopin, Beethoven, Tachaikowsky and Rachmaninoff. . Mr. Pavlov was on tour of the United States and Canada with the Russian Ballet Theatre when it folded due for lack of money and members of the group literally found themselves on the streets of Toronto. Mr. Pavlov stayed for a while with a family in Stouffville, performed concerts there and through this connection was in Port Perry for the Saturday evening concert at the United Church. In a brief interview with the Citizen, he said his decision was made easier by the fact he would have found no work as a pianist in Russia. "It's a very bad situation there. There is no money---the people and the government have no money." His brother®is a physicist in Russia, but now finds himself working as a carpenter's helper. Mr. Pavlov has been sending him money to help support his family. Rotary says no more clothing, thank you The Port Perry Rotary Club has stopped collecting winter clothing and blankets for refugees in war-torn Bosnia. Over the last three weeks, the Club has collected hundreds of bags of clothing, boots and blankets Officials say they have collected enough in Ontario as the shipment area in Toronto Market zoning reviewed Scugog council has agreed in principle ona zoning change for the Country Market, but council wants Township staff to come up with recommendations on what the specific zoning should be. Council asked for the recommendations at a planning meeting Monday afternoon. Ward 1 councillor Ken Carruthers said the issue is whether the zoning should be of a permanent or temporary nature. The Country Market on Highway 7A just west of Port Perry, is in councillor Carruther's ward. He said later members of council were in unanimous agreement on allowing the zoning change but there are still concerns over accessibility. Another request will be made to the Provincial Highways department to reduce the speed limit from 80 to 60 km/hour. NLISABOUT (CHOCOLATE 182 Queen Street Port Perry 985-0761 i8 now back-logged. In asking that people stop dropping off clothing and blankets, members of the Port Perry club expressed appreciation to the many people in Scugog and area who took the time to make donations. As for his nine months in Canada, he's "very pleased, very happy. So many people have helped." He has declined any social assistance while supporting himself by teaching classical piano and taking on just about any kind of performances he can find, including the lounge at a large downtown hotel. While trained as a classical pianist and a graduate (doctoral degree) of the famed Moscow Conservatory, he plays just about any kind of music, can improvise and retain new musical pieces, including Broadway show tunes. He spent five years as the piano accompanist for the Soviet National Rhythmic Gymnastics team and was concert pianist with MOSCONCERT in Moscow before joining the ill-fated Ballet Theatre in 1990. He was accompanied to Port Perry on Saturday evening by student Dori Romantini of Aurora who played Beethoven's Sonata in D Minor. Mr. Pavlov recently was granted a work permit and feels Canada is the place where he can reach his dream of becoming a concert pianist.
