Former VIA passengers promise Tories rough ride The people who used to ride the VIA train from Havelock to Toronto have long memories. It was three years ago this week (Jan. 15, 1990) when the last VIA train rumbled up the line with its cargo of commuters. The tracks are still there, but the stations are gone. And all those people who used to travel to their jobs in Toronto have long since found other ways to get to work. The Toronto-Havelock line was among several across the country that died three years ago thik month when the federal goyernment withdrew the subsfdy that kept it operating. Paul Pagneulo, president of the Toronto-Havelock Line Passenger Association, said last week the group plans to make this an issue in the next federal election, expected as early as this spring or summer. "We will focus like a laser on the five Tory MPs along the line and they should prepare themselves for an angry back- lash from the voters. "After tossing us out in the cold of winter (Jan. 1990) it's now our turn to toss them out of office," said Pagnuelo in a statement last week. He went on to say that the Passenger Association will remind local voters that Conservative MPs were elected in 1984 on the promise of re- instating and revitalizing VIA service between Toronto and Peterborough. In 1986, "then transport minister Don Mazankowski told commuters to "use it or lose it. We lived up to our end of the bargain, they (the government) did not," said Pagnuelo, who was unsuccessful in a bid to win the Reform Party federal nomination last fall for the wr Scugog Citizen -- Tu 7. 7 /) ry 12, 1993-- 3 da Township Fire Dept. needs two new vehicles Scugog Township is facing a $300,000 price tag to replace two trucks in the Fire Department's fleet. Fire Chief Don Steele has told the council's fire committee the Department needs to replace a 30-year old pumper for Hall 1 in Port Perry and the rescue ¥ehicle at Hall 2 in Caesarea. r Cost of a new pumper is about $226,000 and $764000 for the rescue truck. / Chief Steele told the committee the 30-year old pumper likely "would not pass a safety inspection and/or stress test." Fire vehicles have a life expectancy of about 22 years. As for the rescue vehicle, it does not meet current standards and the safety of firefighters could be in jeopardy while on the way to an emergency because of lack of proper storage for equipment and lack of regulation seats. Mayor Howard Hall said there is no provincial grant money available to Scugog to buy this kind of equipment. The Fire Committee will meet again with Chief Steele before making any recommendation on the equipment request, said the Mayor on Monday. Also needed by the Department is a second storey to Hall 1 in Port Perry for extra training space and storage of equipment. In a recent meeting with the Fire committee, Chief Steele stressed that replacing the - pumper and rescue truck are vital and urgent for the , department.
