wr 30-- Scugog Cifizen -- Tuesday , Nc 1b 24, 1992 du Scugog plans 'eco-park' A park of a different kind will developed over the next three years by Scugog Township. The Township will begin next year to turn about eight acres of land north of the public boat launch in Port Perry into what is being described as a "natural" or *ecologicol park." "We hope the park will be more like a conservation area. What we are trying to do is give Mother Nature a helping hand," explained Ward 3 councillor and parks committee chairman Marilyn Pearce public open house in the municipal chambers last Thursday evening. The Township owns the land in question that runs along the shore of Lake Scugog from the boat launch to Beech Street Other than a foot-path that is used in winter as a link from the lake to snowmobile trails the land has been neglected over the years But starting next spring, that is going to start to change and slowly over the next three years, the park development At the open house last week, attended by about 30 people, councillor Pearce stressed that once complete, this new park is not going to resemble Palmer or Birdseye Parks. It will be geared to more passive forms of recreation like strolling, bird watching, fishing and general nature appreciation. Foot paths and a cycling path will constructed, there will be benches (but no picnic tables) and a couple of wooden platforms on the shorelines for fishing or just observing the natural environment. Wherever possible, new planting will follow the shrubs, bushes, flowers and trees that occur naturally in the area School groups and volunteer organizations will be encouraged to assist the Township in these planting programs, said councillor Pearce The design will protect the shoreline and the sensitive wetland areas within the new parkland will take form Estimated cost of developing Stolen vehicles recovered The escapee and another youth were apprehended by Police in downtown Port Perry on Saturday. In another incident a car Durham Police recovered two stolen vehicles in Port Perry over the weekend and charges have been laid against several youthful offenders including one who escaped from fhe Brookside Training School near Cobourg. reported stolen from Oshawa was spotted by the owner in Port Perry. Several occupants fled on foot. this new "eco park" is in the $40,000 range, and the Township has already received one-third of this amount in the form of a grant from the provincial government. Most of the people who attended last Thursday night's Open House reside on either Simcoe Street or Beech Street and have properties that back onto the area. Councillor Pearce said the Township will continue to take suggestions from the pubhc over the next several months. And she said the Township will consult with residents as to whether fencing is needed. Turning this area into a park for passive recreation follows a growing trend in Ontario and elsewhere these days. For éxample, walking is the post popular of leisure activities, according to a Ministry of Publication. And bird watching is now one of the fastest growing hobby in North America. The new park will eventually have hlinds built for this activity. Councillor Pearce said the park will not interfere with the existing snowmobile trail that follows the old rail line right- of -way. Members of the Port Perry Snowmebile Club have been briefed on the plans for this new park. But, she added, snowmobiles will .not be permitted on the interior foot- paths that are to be built through the park area.
