Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 10, 1993 -- 13_4a Restoring old photos a timely link to the past On November 11, at 11:00 a.m., factory whistles will blow, machines will shut down and thousands of Canadians will stand in silence for two minutes. Each will wear a red poppy in their lapel. A link will be forged with the past. The true, surviving memories of those challenging yet victorious times are held by a rapidly diminishing generation of Canadians. Within many families, the only tangible memories that link with these important events are a few cracked and faded photographs glued into the family album. The album probably needs to be replaced after years of use and the photos are possibly in danger of being lost or, worse still, deteriorating beyond repair. . For many years, professional photographers have been restoring these kinds of old photos. Studios and laboratories have been perfecting techniques and applying them to scratched negatives and prints that are torn, faded or damaged by moisture. As with other similar services, advancements in technology have been significant in the past few years. Handing over a treasured family photo for restoration to a . photographic studio can often be 4 difficult thing to do. There is a concern for its safety. Will it be returned with even more damage? Will it be lost in the process? There is concern for cost. What am I actually paying for? When a healthstyles deb macdonald Wild rice is not really a member of the rice family, but a seed of an aquatic grass that is native to North America. It is more expensive than regular rice but it expands to about four times its original size, therefore a little will go a long way. It is not "refined."Rich in fibre, protein, B vitamins and minerals. Wild rice is also low in fat. Especially around holiday season, it can be used in stuffings or as an elegant side dish with currants and pine nuts. If you wish to enjoy the earthy flavour of wild rice at a lower cost, it can be purchased as a short grade mixed with white rice or make your own mixture. Winter Squash with Wild Rice Stuffing This is a meal on its own! 1/2 cup wild rice 1 V4 cups stock or water 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 small leek (or onion) minced oil for sauteing (about 2 tsp.) 1 rib celery, minced 1/2 tsp orange zest 1 orange, peeled, segmented 1/4 cup pecans, chopped slat & pepper to taste 1 egg white, lightly beaten 2 winter squashes, halved, seeds removed, and steamed or baked to soften. Cook the wild rice in the stock or water until all the liquid is absorbed (about 45-50 minutes). (If you are using a wild rice mixture, follow the directions on the box for preparation). Saute the garlic and leek in enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of a sauce pan. Add the celery and continuing sauteing a couple of minutes more. Combine the cooked rice, sauteed vegetables, orange zest, orange sections, pecans, salt, pepper and egg white. Spoon stuffing into squashes and place in a baking pan so that they are not touching. About 1/4 inch of water should be added to the bottom of the pan. Bake in a 375° F oven for 30 minutes. The first step is to evaluate the damage and estimate the cost of restoration. Once the customer signs an "Approval to Proceed" the second step is to re-photo- graph the original photo to produce what is called a "copy negative". It is from this negative that a "working print" is made. This enables the artist to do all the restoration work on the working print, leaving the original photo to be returned to the customer in its original condition. The next step is to photograph the restored image on the working print and produce a final print. At this point, any number of prints can be produced for the customer. Careful attention is paid to the matching colour, tone and density so that evidence of the artwork will be barely visible. Depending on the condition of) I the original photo, restoration techniques will vary. Special photographic dyes, pencils or chalks may be used and in severe cases the artist will use a technique called "airbrushing"- painting with air-injected liquid dyes. Restoring photos of an earlier generation is the first step towards strengthening the family root connections. For more information on the availability of photo restoration and the "International Family Tree Kit" in your community, contact Paul Tarrant, Colortron Photo Services Ltd., 1-800-263- 1389 or R.J.M.
